Subject: Self supported races
Due to transportation issues, I am not able to run an official half marathon this year. I still want to run one really badly though, so I have decided to run a self supported one next month. My question is whether you think a self supported race counts as an actual race, or just as a fun workout? Does your answer change if you do the self supported race at the same pace you would do an official race of the same distance? Does the actual classification even mater?

Thanks for the replies! I'm just curious.

I'd call it just a fun work-out. I've run a few 10-Milers in my mary training, and even if they were PRs as compared to my actual 10-Miler, it's still not really "a race". But it does give me an idea as to what to expect the next time I do a 10-Mile race.

Have you been training for the distance? If not, what's the rush? Wait for one that you can get to.

You can choose to call it what you want, but I would think most definitions of "race" would consider it to be a competition. Maybe competing against yourself is enough...

What difference does it make, anyway?

It's a fun workout, and could count toward a "personal best", but it's not a "race".

Get someone else to run it, and each of you run it at your own race pace.  Then you can call it a race.  It helps if the winner gets a prize.

Whether it's a race or not only matters to you.  13.1 is 13.1 whether you're wearing a number or not.

You could do your self supported half marathon on the same day and time as an actual race is being run. You could also chart out the elavation of the race course and try to match it as best as possible. Then compare your time to theirs.

Well I ran my fastest 13.1 miles this weekend during my 20 mile run but I would not count it as my PR. One I like to cite my races when I give a PR and 2 giving yourself a reason to push during a race is one of the funniest parts of the race. This lastest weekend I pred during a 5k. I even made my time goal. It was hard and I had to push myself but having that goal is the reason I did not give up. Plus you do not always know if your distance is all that accurate either.

I would still encourage you to treat it as a race and go out and run your hardest. I just would not count it as a half marathon or as a pr if you do beat your pervious best time.

Remember when it comes to a PR its ulimately you are the only one who cares and it matters too unless your trying to use it for another's race qualification.

I woudl not count it in race totals since otherwise I ran 100s of 5ks in races but really only done 5 of them.

If they do have a 5k or half marathon split I will use that as my PR though. For me its about knowing the distance is accurate.

Bear and his rhetorical questions...

If you are racing alone, it's a race against yourself...if it's a race against others, it's still a race against yourself...

have fun!

Get 3 or 4 friends to all run it with you... then give out prizes! Now it's a race!!!

A race implies two or more competitors.  Bragging rights are an acceptable prize.  Some say the best prize.  I prefer cash.

I'd call it a 13.1mi time-trial.  Having periodic time trials are great for fitness measures if you can't race often.

Sorry but it's just a workout.  To be a race you must pay and entre fee.  Send me $30 and then you can call it a race ($75 if you want a T-shirt).
