Well I have been fighting it off, but I took out the trainer, mounted my bike on it and rode the first of many indoor training sessions in the coming months. Depressing. It is not that we won't be seeing a few more good days before the Northwest winter drizzle begins, it is just that I still have one more tri (in California November 8th) and I have to keep up my race training schedule.

I'll admit that I am a lightweight when it comes to riding in the rain. I think it goes back to my days in Colorado. Funny because bad weather won't keep me out of open water (or from running), but biking in the rain is just not my thing.

So I'll dig out my old Tour de France tapes/DVDs and the few triathlons I have recorded and prepare myself for the long haul. The one good thing is that I am able to put in long sessions watching them.

If you want to break up the monotony of riding the trainer, come out to the shop and hop on the Inside Ride and do the Mt. Ventoux ride. There's no cost to ride it, and it's a heck of a workout.

The Inside Ride is literally a bicycle treadmill. As you increase speed and ride towards the front, the belt speeds up. When riding a programmed course, the front end rises to match the grade of the hill you're climbing. We have one of only two in operation.

Thanks I'll take you up on that. How far ahead should I call you?

I've always wanted to ride Ventoux. In 1995 2 old friends and I rode in the Alps. Even saw a few of days of the tour (Alp Duez, La Plane & Paris). We rented a small RV and drove to the bottom of mountain passes. We then spent the day going up and over some of the biggest & most famous. Saw Indurain win his last Tour, watch Pantani race up the Alp and saw a young pre-cancer Armstrong racing with the big boys.

We were going to follow them to the Pyrenees, but decided to ride in the southern alps and then climb Ventoux. Unfortunately I blew out my Achilles tendons and spent the day riding 100 miles around it while my 2 mountain goat friends climbed it (one lived in Durango and weighed 155lbs and the other lived in Vail and weighed 148lbs - I was not at my best at 182lbs and living at sea level)

I've always wanted to have a second chance at the climb.

don't mean to make you jealous but I've just put my trainer away for the season.  its trying very hard to be spring down here

After a very wet and windy winter and too many dodgy weather rides i'm looking foward to some good weather out door rides!

I went out in the first light rain of the season last week and had a bit of an incident that sent pieces of my Orbea in several different directions and has my hip and other important body parts in a bad way.  I'll take a trainer ride over that every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

It's easier to execute workouts on the trainer! I love the trainer...but do dislike the transition from all on-road riding to mostly-trainer riding.

As for the rain, I never go out in the rain...it's just not worth the risk. I don't mind it (heck, I did IMLP this year), but it's safest to avoid it.

Being on the trainer depends so much an what you do with it.  My current schedules are calling for 60 minute rides in Zone 1 or 2.  These are hard on the trainer.  It's so much easier to have a set of intervals and such to work through.  With the long workouts I start watching the clock and that drags on.  Who the heck started putting storylines into action movies?!?  Just blow stuff up and get on with it!

Most of the time you can just show up. Especially weekdays if your work schedule is flexible, from 1-4 there's rarely anyone riding it.
