Subject: What is wrong with my shoulder???

I woke up on Friday to a mysterious pain in my right shoulder.  It feels sharp at times, but at other times the pain is dull and radiating throughout the whole shoulder.  It does not seem dependent on whether I am actually doing something with the arm, sometimes it is the most agonizing when I am just sitting around.

I went swimming on Wed but it didn't hurt on Thursday.  The pain started Friday morning, but I went on a long bike ride in the middle of the day and it didn't bother me at all.  Then once I got home, it hurt for the rest of the day.  Woke up Saturday, felt fine, went riding, no pain, went running, and about half a block into the run it came back with a vengeance and I actually ended up cutting my run short because it was so painful.  Now today is long run day, I was planning on doing 9-10 miles, but I'm not sure if my shoulder will cooperate.  It hurts ever so slightly at the moment.

Any ideas on what this might be?  Anyone experience anything similar?

I don't know if this helps you, but I have had shoulder pain on and off for three years. It's never sharp, tho, more of a dull to moderate thing. I think it's related to stiffness in my right arm due to spending too many hours a day for too many years at a computer. (mousing). Then when I started swimming, that was like the straw that broke the camel's back. I did have it looked at by a ortho who said I have Type II Acromioin (there's actually a link to that condition at the top of this page right now). He gave me some PT stuff for it. The weird thing is if I stop swimming it gets worse. If I swim too much it gets worse. So some movement is good for it. I try to stretch it well before swimming, and also try to work on improving my swimming technique. I think I put too much muscle into my catch too early.

Here's that link in case it's gone when you see this post...

Edit: after posting this, I decided to go have a look at that article. Lo and behold, it was MY question. I have to go read it now!!!

Edit 2: also, think about non-workout things that could have caused it. When my youngest child was 5, she still liked me to pick her up alot. Once she leaned out to reach for a toy while I was holding her...that killed my shoulder and I had to go to the doctor about it and rest it using a sling. I got Plantar Fascitis back when I was a couch potato because of how I propped my feet up on my desk drawer.

Thanks for the info.  I ran today and the pain was not bad, barely felt anything for the first 5 miles and then it started to hurt a little, but not too bad.

I did a search and realized that I posted about a very similar problem about a year ago.  At that point I had just started training.  If I remember correctly, I dialed back the swim and weight training and forced myself to learn how to breathe on the right side so I could breathe bilaterally, which I do now.

About a month ago, I dropped the small amount of weight lifting I had been doing (about 30 min of shoudler/back/chest excercises once or twice a week).  I wonder if that has anything to do with it.
