So I hear there will be volunteers lined up at the swim exit to assist with taking off the wetsuit.

No matter how much body glide I put on, it's always a challenge for me getting the wetsuit off.

And after a 2.4 mile swim, I may need all the help i can get and  will take up an offer from a volunteer to get it off.

Any hints on making that part easier? For both me and the volunteer?

It will rip right off.....you'll be surpised. Just make sure you have it down to your waist before laying on the ground.

Get it off ofyour arms if you can. If you can't, they will unzip you, pull it down to your waist and past your butt. THEN you sit on the ground and they rip it off your legs.

If you do get it off your arms and down to your waist, DO NOT SIT ON THE GROUND UNTIL IT'S PAST YOUR BUTT.

That's the biggest mistake people make. It's hard to rip that wetsuit off you if you are sitting on it.

GOOD LUCK!

Didn't think about laying down. I was just planning on standing up and 'stepping' out of it as I normally do, but if it's faster  for them to rip it off laying down, sounds good to me.

So if I'm sitting down on the sand while this happens, I shouldn't be too concerned about getting sand in my shorts?

thx.

As a past wetsuit stripper at IMFL, we can handle anything so don't worry.

There are lots of wetsuit strippers so don't worry about stopping at the first ones....biggest mistake folks do as the people at the end are ready and you will get helped right away.

Tips
1. As you exit the water take your arms out and get your wetsuit down to your waist if possible.
2. If you can't get your arms out or unzip they will help you but you need to deal with your googles and swim cap and if they are in your hand they can get jammed in your wetsuit sleeve
3. Don't have your timing chip on the bottom of your leg of your wetsuit
4. Lay down on your back with your feet facing them..as they pull lift your bum if wetsuit is still up above your waist
5. Listen to your wetsuit strippers..they are there to help you be fast
6. Remember to take your wetsuit with you
7. Don't wait for first few folks move down the line as there are probably 15 folks or more stripping.
8. Say thanks as they are probably getting your urine on them helping them

one big problem with strippers (uh, wet suit) is that they can be quite harsh on your suit. I have several finger nail gouges from them and I saw one guy who had huge full thickness rips.

Just make sure your shorts are on tight underneath. The fans  got more than they bargained for this past summer when a  competitors shorts came off with his suit.  Maybe he took the term stripper too literally. Anyway just make sure it's down far enough so when you sit they can pull it the rest of the way off and they don't have to fight your body weight sitting on it. Good Luck and really I mean really don't sweat the small stuff. One way or another it's coming off.

What about the timing chip?  Should we take it off or will they deal with it?

I wouldn't rely on that assumption that the biggest guy will do the job the best or fastest.

Just a note about stepping out of it. I have seen several people try to step out of the wetsuit that have never swam an IM distance in a wetsuit before and there are a few things to think about. You have been horizontal for over an hour and at the stage of getting the wetsuit off you might still be too dizzy to try to stand on one foot while pulling the other out (watching people fall over), the other is leg/calve cramps. I have seen a few pull a leg out only to experience the bad calve cramps while pointing those toe's down trying to get the leg out.

Distance does strange things to the body in the swim. Just a thought.

Are you putting body glide on your ankles and wrists as well?  I find this to be extemely useful in getting my suit off.  With enough body glide, you can be stripped in a matter of seconds.  Just remember to have something on under it.  I recall a race where one athlete forgot to wear a suit underneath.  talk about a fast T1 time.

Are the strippers just pulling from the ankles or starting from the waist and peeling it off inside out?  It always seems to come off quicker inside out but I think you are all saying they just grab at the foot and pull like crazy...

Inside out. The wetsuit is around your waist or lower, lay down and they grab the bulk and "Strip", inside out when done. Pretty damn quick

Thanks.  Yeah, that would go nice and quick.  To echo one of KathyG's tips then: make sure your chip is not caught on top of the leg of your suit!  If it's udner it'll barely be touched.  If it's over it's going to get sent somewhere halfway on the bike course!
