I'm working on starting a triathlon club for my area and it as recommended to me that I need to get insurance for the club. I was told:

"To be an official club – (jersey’s etc) you are expected to carry insurance to cover group rides / runs / swims. It’s a sick world when people are suing each other for hot coffee – but it’s amazing how fingers start getting thrown around when something bad happens."

Does a triathlon club really need such insurance for this? I'm just 21 and not much of an expert on insurance so any advice would be amazing. The USAT insurance is a min payment of 250 dollars, do most clubs get this?

I don't think that you need insurance simply by virtue of being a club.

I wouldn't be an originator or officer without having the insurance. But that's me.

By the way, I think starting a club is a great idea and wouldn't let this stop you.

Unfortunately YES, you should carry insurance. In today’s society, even your best friend might turn on you to make an extra dollar from an insurance claim after they scrape their knee because they tripped on a training run that the club mapped out and did not warned of the uneven surface.

That is why we all pay so much for insurance….no room for common sense.

Is it going to be a paid membership club or just some friends meeting up?  If you are charging for services etc definately get insurance.  Also, if you become a USAT coach I believe you get insurance but I could be wrong.

This makes me wonder...I started an email list (via Yahoo groups) for people interested in swimming at a local lake. It's just a casual thing, and we send emails asking "who's interested in swimming this week". Should I worry about getting sued? We swim in a spot that is not part of an official park.

I'm a board member of a tri team. We have insurance through USAT and it runs close to $1K a year...but well worth it.

It just is part of the dues or membership fees you collect from members.

It might be helpful to contact the USAT folks in your region to get some input and advice on how to start. I think there is an arm of USAT that helps with new clubs.
