SOOOO . . . you may or may not know that I have written several threads about my stupid knees. And what to do about them. And my  dr.s (I think I enraged some other dr.s . . . oooops). Long story short, I have to get knee surgery. My MRI showed that my left knee cap is totally out of line. It is tilted and overhanging the other bones (whatever those are). So, yeah, I am getting knee surgery Nov. 7. I won't be able to "train" for three months. But, supposedly, this will fix my pain and be a miracle--as long as I do all the PT correctly, etc. Ah! I am actually kind of scared, but my knee hurts no matter what I do now and my Dr. was said there was NO way I should be running or doing a triathlon at all. I mean, I wake up with my knee aching and it hurts whenever I do any kind of exercise. If I keep going the way it is, it will eventually rub all of my cartaladge (sp?) away. So . . . any encouragement? Successes? So I am still going to be keeping track of diet on here. And I am going to be keeping track of physical therapy and strength training, but it's going to look like I am totally slacking on training for about three months. But I kind of don't have an option. I will do as much as I can. But I want a super-awesome recovery. Anyway, so there was the explanation. And, just to note, the Dr. who didn't do the MRI said that I should just go out and run. Good thing I got the expert opinion, huh?

You didn't enrage anybody here that I know of.  Just people offering some differing opinions.

Good luck with everything.

sounds nasty - make sure you do all the PT as prescribed!

Also, you can still lift weights upper body, do core work and swim. You don't have to kick at all when you swim, so once you're recovered enough to be up and about and get the doc's OK, you can give that a go also.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Think of this as a change in course towards your final goal and not a defeat. You can do it!

I think that is good news. There is a reason you had pain, they found it, and will fix it. I would use this time to work on resistance training and swimming (if the doc allows it), and dial in the nutrition side of this adventure. You can also use the "Extra Time" to read triathlon training books and get all motivated and stuff.

Is your surgery going to be orthroscopic? If it is your recovery will be much faster. If not you may be in for a slightly longer haul. Either way you have to get it done or find a way to deal with the constant pain and risk further injury. I have a rather stupid example that I hope will help you.

I twisted my ankle to the point of hearing it snap and feeling the warmness flush through it on February 4th 2006. I decided that I would need to take two weeks off from running. I then started running on it again. In order to get through this I would ice it down before running. Ice it down after running, then ice it down before bed. I went to the doctor on June 5, 2006 because it wasn't getting any better. I had reconstructive ankle surgery on Sept 6, 2006 to repair 2 ruptured peroneal tendons. I was in a cast for 9 weeks and a Bledsoe boot for another 12 weeks then PT for 12 more weeks. The total recovery time for this injury was almost 1 year. My doctor told me that the extended recovery time was due to waiting so long between injury and repair and that running on the injured tendons turned them into "Hamburger Meat" his words not mine.

Looking back at this I can't believe I was this stupid. If you are hurt and you don't start to make progress in a few weeks you absolutely need to see a doctor. Once you see the doctor you must take action. Please do not mess around with this. If you catch it early you will recover faster.

Not necessarily true....

The scope part of my knee surgery (which was a mini-lateral release, not a complete one) took MUCH longer to recover from than the two inch incision on the side of my knee where they did an IT Band Release.

It's WHAT they find/do during the scope that determines how long it will take to recover from.

Having had knee surgery about a year or so ago, my best advice is to be VERY proactive about recovery.  Don't push it, take it slow, do all your PT, ice it lots, rest it lots, etc. etc.  Then when you start up with real training again take it very very slowly.  You don't want to end up having surgery again.  Be a good patient.
