I just saw it on HBO and I thought it was very good. It's one of those feel good movies and hits you in the right spot, sort of makes you sad in a way (because son's interpretation of relationship he had with father) but at the end, you walk away feeling, not happy or sad, but oh well, I can't explain it. ARGH!

I cried the first time I saw that movie. I can't quite explain it, but something about the son finally realizing who his father was but not having the time to enjoy him as he was.

I liked it too. It's kind of like a spanish novel... It doesn't really go anywhere, and there may not be any kind of plot, but in the end, you're glad you read it becuase you got to experience a very unique life

LOL

This movie, I rented it to watch one night with my husband, a week after his father passed away. I didn't know anythng about it, just heard it was really good. Should have read the back of the box or something, my husband was crying and wanted to know why I rented that movie.

Oops. Still was a good movie though.

I think the feelings everyone is talking about are exactly the intent of the movie. I was overall really happy for the son because at least he would be able to remember his father as who he really was and not have all the conflict that he had at the begining. But yeah there was a touch of sadness over what could have been if it had been resolved earlier.

The father in that movie reminded me so much of my grandfather. He was from Maine but lived most of his life in small town Alabama. Everyone loved him because he was always trying to help people and he always had a story to tell. Of course his stories were not quite the tall tales in Big Fish, close but not quite.

Anyway yeah a good movie.

I saw that movie when it came out in the theater. I'm a big Tim Burton fan and loved all of his movies, even Mars Attacks!!! But...this movie really hit me, especially at the end when everyone showed up for the funeral. It really makes you think that the father in some way touched all those people's lives that showed up. How crazy we may think the stories the father told to his son, you just can't deny that the father lived a full life and doesn't regret one thing.

I loved that while the son expected AlL of his father's stories to be lies, at the funeral you realize that there was truth within each one, even if the father exaggerated. For instance, I expected that the Siamese twins would turn out to be completely made up. Turns out they really existed, only they were not Siamese twins, but regular twins. This reminds me how each of us embroiders our own memories, and that sometimes the stories we tell ourselves are truer to us than reality is. But I thought iwas great that the son realized his father wasn't decieving him as much as he had assumed.

I absolutely loved this movie from start to finish. It was a joyous celebration of the tall tale and a life lived large. Hume Cronyn wrote in is autobiography A Terrible Liar “... memory can be a judicious editor, omitting trial and tribulation. It can also be a terrible liar....” I thought of that line a few times while watching the movie. It is a great observation and while some stories are best taken with a grain of salt most of the time suspension of disbelief is a more enjoyable way to live.

I watched this movie while recovering from back surgery when my dad spent his vacation taking care of me. He used to take me fisihing when I was little, but in my teens, I always had better things to do. I had not spent more than a few hours with him for probably 10 or more years before he drove me home 12 hours to get emergency surgery 2 days later.

So it was a astrange mix of emotions from the moving, combined w ith my circumstances at that moment, all filtered through a narcotic pain induced haze.
