Subject: Donkey Question...???
I recently joined the Tri Wisconsin group... but have yet to make it to any of the workouts... so have not had the chance to ask the question in preson yet... I did my first tri at lake mills last year... and started hearing about the "donkeys" back then... was just wondering what the story/history behind this is??

there seems to be donkeys everywhere...

thanks...

thanks PJ... wish i could make it friday night... seems like a pretty motivational thing to watch... unfortunately (or fortunately - depending on how you look at it) i'm out in vegas for a conference for the rest of the week... must admit that i like the weather better here... anyway, have to head down to the craps table now to try and win enough for new tires for my tri bike...

hopefully there will be another showing some time soon...??

Per the head donkey:

"The head donkey is the beloved Donkey who bleated his early morning blessing two seasons ago. The Donkey Nation strives to catch the carrot through growth and nourishment of the inner donkey through stubborn and steady training practices. All one needs to do is make their donklaration to the pace." -jszat '08

In the simplest terms, like PJ said, the Donkeys are a low-key tri-club, not like that stuffy Tri-WI group . Great bunch of people who enjoy tris, hang together at events, support those competing, sometimes hang together outside of tris and seem to enjoy one another's company, generally. The rituals used to gain acceptance into the club are closely guarded, but they involve Jolly Ranchers and Zima.

Our club leader is a dude by the handle of Jszat, but our spiritual advisor is a donkey who lives in rolling hills of southern Waukesha county. On quiet nights, if you listen closely enough, you can hear his bleating when you face SW....um yeah. Seriously Jszat and another BTer Morey1 came upon our spiritual leader while on a training ride several years ago. We pay him homage with a group ride every Spring and whenever a training ride passes his realm.

In other words, it's a big joke.

OK, that's not true.  It started as a joke, but with the vision of jszat and some donkey gear, and a bunch of cool people, it's became something of an informal club.  You need training partners, a good time, or some really bit#hin' clothing with huge donkey-heads and carrots on them, we're the group for you.

Donkeys are stubborn and steady...getting the job done despite all obstacles.  Rarely are style points awarded.  That's us.

Maybe not for you, Morey, but I gots plenty of style....

And yes, in general, we actually like each other and hang out outside the realms of triathlons (though we generally talk about them a lot).

I am not anti-donkey.  I love you all like family. . . you know, the cousin that is friendly, nice, but got dropped on his head as a child and is sometimes just a bit "off?"

Just a tad sensitive today??

Apparently a standardized sarcasm font needs to be agreed upon.  Let us know when the white paper is ready. :-P

If you didn't know, there is actually a sarc font here on BT

[ sarc ] blah [ / sarc] (minus the spaces)

Or, red italics.

I think I've got it...

Led by jszat and morey1, its a group of great, but questionably stylish, people that love tris... a group that has made a donklaration to support each other in and outside of triathlons... a group that some may deem to be a "bit off"... possibly due to their wearing clothes with donkey heads and carrots... or possibly because some choose to run with their bike helmet on (i'm assuming no one swims with their bike helmet on though)... and while there are clearly some very important rituals involving jolly ranchers and zima... it is even more important to remember the donkeys always bray and not bleat... and some day a fully nourished donkey may be lucky enough to catch the carrot through stubborn and steady training...

only other question than is.... what happens when you catch the carrot??

I don't think it is entirely possible to catch the carrot.  See the carrot transforms as you move towards it.  Right now the carrot is a sprint and finishing for me but as I do that it will become completing an Oly etc.

Like Davey said, you can enjoy that carrot or move on to bigger tastier ones.  Taste and appetite is relative though.  Right now I hear the carrots south of a 3 hour mary and in Hawaii taste really good and thats what i have a taste for.
