Pre-race routine:

Event warmup:

Stood in line for Port-o-Potty. Some stretching, some running warm up.

I started off by trying to stay in Z3 for the first two miles. Did a poor job mentally and kept getting out of my HR zone. At mile two, I planned to pick the pace up to a sub 8 min. mile, then increase the pace to around 7:30 for subsequent miles. Around mile 3, I could tell my legs were not going to go any faster and my quads were really starting to burn. My HR was exceeding 190, which was well above the 182 I had planned to keep it below. Around mile 5 could tell my energy level was dropping, I believe this was a result of 3 factors: 1. Last weeks Abitaman triathlon, 2. Long bike workout on Monday. 3. Insufficient carbo loading this week.

What would you do differently?:

Start closer to the front, to avoid alot of slower runners who did not position themselves in there correct starting locations. Do the same carbo loading routine from the 1/2 Mardi Gras Marathon.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked back up race route to meet Joann, then ran back to the finish with her.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

1. Improper Carbo loading in the preceding days. 2. Performed no speed training prior to race, focus has been on endurance. 3. Did too hard of bike training ride on previous monday.

Event comments:

The temperature was 69F, the dew point was 66.9F, low overcast clouds, fog rolling in off the Mississippi River, with a humidity level of about 100%. As a result of the humidity, I thought the temps were in the 80's at start time. At the end of the race I could feel a slight drizzle.

Good effort, Rob. If we both evened out our splits, we damn near could have run together step-for step (56:24 here).

I swear the humidity was closer to 120%.

Your job sure is allowing you to do a bunch of races this year!!   I hate racing on humid and drizzly days - my hair gets all frizzy.....

A sub 56-min 10K isn't bad at all for someone who sits balled up all day in a box!! I'd take it!

Racing is fun especially if you can enjoy it with an SO, and don't bum over not having gone fast enough (looks like you were going for something like a sub 48 min?), after all you are building up to IM distances!

Have a great N.O. Easter weekend!
