Did this last year as my first HIM - it was great. A little rainy that day but the town is great if you are taking family, the course is challenging and beautifully scenic and the swag is not bad either! Just be prepared for Murder Hill - yipes! You can look at my RR for more detailes if you are interested...

I've heard it's a great event though a few parts of the course are a bit painful - but what else can one expect when you're covering so much ground?? I'm signed up and it will be my first HIM as well so you won't be alone!!!

I did it last year as my first HIM.  I'm going back this year as my second HIM, so that's got to say something.

As it was said, the weather made things less than perfect, but it was a great venue.

bachorb - 2009-05-22 1:25 PM Did it last year, second HIM - beautiful race and well-organized, plus it is pretty cheap to stay in Montauk that time of the year. The weather sucked last year but that can happen anywhere. And don't believe the hype about "Murder Hill." It's probably comparable to Harlem Hill in Central Park but wussier
Yes, but please note this observation is from someone who finished 3rd in his age group -for the rest of us mere mortals (or wusses) Murder Hill is no joke!

Nothing better than a triathlon race in Montauk!  Especially a HIM.  The swim is pretty easy as the water is calm - I mean zero chop, and lots of swim waves so you never have to fight for room.  The bike course is very scenic, a few rolling hills, and passing the Lighthouse twice is priceless!!  Passing that lighthouse is worth the price of the race for me alone.  And the run is not the bad.  Murder Hill does not compare to the Monster Hill at the Rhode Island HIM, it also does not compare to the James Street Hill "Widow Hill" at the Cow Harbor 10k or the Walnut Street Hill, which is 7 miles into the Kings Park 15k.  So by comparison to some other hills, Murder hill is really not-so-bad.

As mentioned, the local beach hotels are only around $130.00  a night, and all of them are within walking or biking distance of Transition/ Finish Line.  I'd say Montauk HIM is a great first HIM, well worth the fee, and I'd give it overall an A+.

Thinking about doing it myself. It would be my first. I was going to do the sprint, but what the heck. I might as well just go for the distance.

Yup.... that is the only downside to this Race, no 'morning of' packet pick-up.  You can get a room relatively cheap though and staying out in Montauk is a lot of fun.

I'm on the fence for this as a possible first HIM and I was wondering if this is a race that I can sign up close to the race date (2 weeks) or does it sell out like NYC/Westchester?

Last year, I signed up not more than two months out.  If I remember correctly, it stayed open late, if not all the way to race day.  You won't be disappointed in the venue and it's a well run race.

Glad to see that this will be alot of peoples first HIM, mine as well. I did the sprint last year so hopefully I will survive the half .  Anyone have suggestions on what they usually do on race day for nutrition during the race? Obviously weight etc. comes in to play, but I was just trying to get an idea of how many gels, water etc I should have with me.

did this as my first HIM last year. Couldnt have been happier with the race. Weather was crap, but i felt worse for the volunteers who gutted it out in the rain.

well organized fun course. Run isn't as bad as people say it is. Just practice on hills.
