My R.B addiction is slowly being replaced by hummus!! Looks like the contents of a diaper, but man it tastes good!!

Anybody have negative nutritional comments about hummus, not that I care at this point (sign of addiction festering).

How about potential uses...it's versatile you know.
Tonight I was tired and hungry, so I threw a couple of scoops of red pepper hummus in with a can of salmon, spread it on some sourdough rye crackers and Voila! Supper. You guys can have that recipe for free!

Hmmmmmm!! Maybe I could mix the hummus with the raisin bran!! I might need the diaper after that little experiment.

don't mind me, I'm just getting restless before my first race this weekend!

I think the ancient Greek translation is (at least in my mind)
Hummus = Ambrosia
Guinness = Nectar

If it was good enough for Zeus, it's good enough for me.

Hummus is EXCELENT for you nutritionally. Common ingredients are chick peas (garbanzo beans), olive oil, garlic, sesame paste, lemon juice, and salt/seasoning. Lots of protein and the olive oil is a good fat.

I like to dip raw veggies in it: carrots, broccoli, cauli, cucumbers, etc., as well as crackers.

Gives me gas sometimes, though. Surprised

Hummus is crazy good.  I usually just eat with raw vegetables, though I have been known to eat it with plain saltines.  I am not sure what else to do with it either.

In addition to veggies and crackers, I also use hummus as a spread on my sandwiches and veggies burgers. If you like hummus, you should try some baba ganoush - similar, but made with eggplant as the base.

hummus is good as a salad dressing as well when mixed with lemon or lime juice.

White bean "hummus" (stolen from Giada DiLaurentiis' Every Day Italian cookbook)

  • 1 can cannellini beans (white beans), drained and rinsed
  • juice of half a lemon
  • Minced garlic to your taste
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • olive oil - pour in as you blend in food processor so it's creamy, but not oily - sorry, I never measure

You can modify this by adding in any sort of spices you want - cayenne or paprika to give it a kick, oregano for a little more flavor, etc. And I like this because tahini, which is the sesame paste in hummus, is VERY fatty. The beans and olive oil are great for consistency alone and with way less fat.

Obviously, this works with black beans as well, but add more "mexican" ingredients, like jalapeno, lime juice, cilantro, maybe a little bit of green pepper or onion.

Hummus is a staple in our household.  We dip crackers, veggies, tortilla chips and pita in it...great on a bagel for lunch or snack, I replace mayo & mustard with hummus on sandwiches..use it as a adhesive component when I make lettuce wrap sandwiches....absolutely love it and love the fact that it's good for you.  Not good, however, is the fact that in my uncontrollable hunger mania episode this morning, I ate 3/4 of a tub of the stuff.  My favorite brand right now is Sabra.

Ummm love the hummus!!!  Right now I'm into Naked Pita chips (the big bag from Costco) with hummus or Garlic Parmesean Triscuit thin crisps (plain or original hummus for this since the chips have the garlic/cheese kick)....

Me too! The black olive kind is my absolute favorite. I can eat it with anything: carrots, other random raw vegetables, pita chips, pretzals, crackers.... Even my 7 and 3 year old girls love it.

OP: I like R.B. too but just in the morning. It's not one of those cereals I can eat anytime. (unlike Golden Grahams )

I was once addicted to Raisin Bran and many other cereals...but now hummus is my new favorite meal to eat before or after workouts.  I've even tried it once with a chili powder mixed in and it was FANTASTIC!
