Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Assess your fitness level, can you run a couple of miles, etc. Then find a plan here on BT that gets you where you want to be. Which tri are you doing in Aug? Get into the General Discussion area and cruise those threads... or do a search (there is an icon for it in the upper-right hand corner)... for stuff you have questions about. New user![]() ![]() | ![]() I am doing the "Take on the Heat" Tri in The Colony on Aug 16th. As far as fitness level, I can ride the entire race no problem...but the swim and run are taking a lot of training. I can swim about 200 without stopping, so I am getting close, but the run really needs work. I am an ex offensive lineman, so running more than 40 yards is a REALLY long way for me!!! =) And at 315 lbs, I am excited to just run 1.5 miles without stopping. I am really looking forward to getting involved in this...and yes, I live in Frisco. Are there more of us out there? Where does everyone train? I look forward to training with you sometime... Jeff |

We are hosting a run / breakfast this coming Saturday in Frisco (email Marcia for more information). This would be a great opportunity to talk to other folks who are in the same boat as you. I'll be there and can offer any (training plans, advice, input) I can. As for your tri in August. Take on the Heat is a GREAT race! It is a great indoor swim (no need for open water swim practice) and the run course is nice and flat. YOU WILL NEED TO PRACTICE RUNNING IN THE HEAT! You will need to know what you body will need over the course of 3 miles (maybe additional water, or some sort of energy boast). |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jeff, there are a lot of triathletes in the Frisco, Colony, Plano, McKinney area. Where do you swim today? I work out at LA Fitness at various locations around the area. I am planning on doing the Take on the Heat as well... My experience is that you should aim to be able to do about 50% more than the individual distances of your race, as it is different when you string all of them together. If your running is not up to par, there is no shame in walking parts of the run, as I still have to do this as I work on my running. (Someday I will be able to run a 5k with no walk breaks...) To add a friend, go under the settings button and put the user name in the blanks for friends. You can add me as well if you wish. If I were you, I would log my workouts in the training logs, it will help a lot. Also the hill repeats on Thursday are a good time (at least last week was...) I would try to get out for them a couple of times... -Andy |

Yes, that would be the goal I would set for two reasons, first you will have more confidence that you can accomplish all the distances regardless of how you feel going into each. Second, there is a difference between racing and working out as the adrenaline ramps up and there is more cumulative fatigue as you go... Hill repeats are riding up a hill or several hills over and over. Riding on hills is the only way to get better at riding hills... |

New user![]() ![]() | ![]() Oh, I have no doubt that they make you better, but with greatness comes pain...a lot of pain =) I would love to join you guys sometime, but I dont have a bike yet...I rented one for the race and plan to ride it a few times prior to race day. Most of my time has been spent on the spin bike at the gym. I am getting really excited about the race. thanks to all of you for your advice. |

I actually just did my first run with the Frisco tri club this evening and I highly recommend you try it. I run around an 18 minute mile while the others are faster but it's all good. I didn't even know I would enjoy it this much, but I did and I'll bet you would too. |

I would suggest finding a bike group to go riding with to build your milage (indoor cycling is not the same). There are many good groups (an assortment of skill and speed levels) with the plano bicycling association. www.planobicycling.org They ride on saturday mornings out of north Plano. My bike is getting better with time (I am riding at 20mph at the gym), and I just ran 2 miles without stopping...the most I have ever run at once. I can see improvement in those two diciplines, but do not seem to be getting any "better" at my swim. I can swim about 150m without stopping, but then my endourance gets worse and worse. I end up only able to swim 50m at a time...so not only am I frustrated, I am at a loss. |

As far as the swimming I have similar problems. Although I don't like the advice I received it is true that the more you do the better you will get at it. I setup my swims so my longest chunk was at the beginning, when I had the most energy. Then I would add 25 on to the distance each week, which seemed to work for me up to my expected race distance at 300. You might try that and see how it works for you. If you've only been training 4 weeks you are seeing good progress, but some of these things just take time to develop and improve. You're doing great, just keep truckin. |

Like JeepFleep/Aaron said... it's all about form... once you have the form, the endurance will come. If you don't have any formal swim training and you are just in there doing it... your form might need some help. Getting one-on-one coaching lessons is money well spent. |

Well, a bike is probably #1 priority... then swim lessons. ![]() Look into renting TI (Total Immersion) from your library. It's a great (and free) place to start for working on swim technique.
