Hi all,

So I saw the Kona Tri on TV and thought it would be a lot of fun to try.  I have my first sprint Tri in Aug.  Does anyone have any suggestions or tips for training, racing, transitions, etc.

Any advise would be great.  thanks so much.

Get at least one open water swim before your race...
If you haven't done an OWS before, it can be quite shocking...

Assess your fitness level, can you run a couple of miles, etc.  Then find a plan here on BT that gets you where you want to be.  Which tri are you doing in Aug?

I see you live in the Frisco area - there are quite a few BT's up here.  I am sure any of us would be glad to help you or perhaps join in some workouts...

Don't be so nervous... what you saw on TV for Kona is NOT a sprint. No where near it.

Get into the General Discussion area and cruise those threads... or do a search (there is an icon for it in the upper-right hand corner)... for stuff you have questions about. Trust me, there have been thousands of people here who asked the same questions you want to ask.

Good luck and have fun!

I am doing the "Take on the Heat" Tri in The Colony on Aug 16th.  As far as fitness level, I can ride the entire race no problem...but the swim and run are taking a lot of training.  I can swim about 200 without stopping, so I am getting close, but the run really needs work.

I am an ex offensive lineman, so running more than 40 yards is a REALLY long way for me!!!  =)  And at 315 lbs, I am excited to just run 1.5 miles without stopping.

I am really looking forward to getting involved in this...and yes, I live in Frisco.  Are there more of us out there?  Where does everyone train?  I look forward to training with you sometime...

Get a swim coach. Kirsten Warner at Texas Triple Threat can help you out... well worth every penny.

If you add me to your friends list, you can see where/when I train. I am doing hill repeast on Thursday nights out at Windhaven. You are welcome to join me anytime. I started another thread about that.

Good luck and keep training!

Jeff - check out the Frisco Triathlon Club at www.friscotriathlonclub.com The president Marcia is wonderful and there are others just like you who are just starting their tri careers. We are hosting a run / breakfast this coming Saturday in Frisco (email Marcia for more information). This would be a great opportunity to talk to other folks who are in the same boat as you. I'll be there and can offer any (training plans, advice, input) I can.

As for your tri in August. Take on the Heat is a GREAT race! It is a great indoor swim (no need for open water swim practice) and the run course is nice and flat. YOU WILL NEED TO PRACTICE RUNNING IN THE HEAT! You will need to know what you body will need over the course of 3 miles (maybe additional water, or some sort of energy boast).

Jeff, there are a lot of triathletes in the Frisco, Colony, Plano, McKinney area.  Where do you swim today?  I work out at LA Fitness at various locations around the area.  I am planning on doing the Take on the Heat as well...  My experience is that you should aim to be able to do about 50% more than the individual distances of your race, as it is different when you string all of them together.  If your running is not up to par, there is no shame in walking parts of the run, as I still have to do this as I work on my running.  (Someday I will be able to run a 5k with no walk breaks...)

To add a friend, go under the settings button and put the user name in the blanks for friends.  You can add me as well if you wish.  If I were you, I would log my workouts in the training logs, it will help a lot.   Also the hill repeats on Thursday are a good time (at least last week was...)  I would try to get out for them a couple of times...

I swim at 24 hour in Frisco (Preston Rd).  As far as doing 50% more...are you suggesting that I train to be able to swim 525m, ride 20 miles, and run 4.5 miles?  Those distances are for  an individual workout, not a brick, correct?

I modified my workout last Monday...I did a "half" (sort of) sprint tri at the gym.  I swam a 200, and then jumped on the bike for 7 miles, and then ran about a mile.  I felt great after the workout, but tonight I went for a swim and had to rest after every 50m.  Am I doing something wrong?  or just having a bad day?  Any suggestions?  I am really frustrated right now...

I tried to add you as a friend, but I do not have the "friend" icon under settings.  Do you have to be a "real" member to add friends?  I am only a free member right now.  If not look me up on facebook.  Jeff White in Frisco

Hill repeats?  I don't think I know what those are.  Is that with Triple Threat?  And please explain how anything including HILLS is FUN!!!  =)  j/k

I look forward to meeeting you and all of our fellow triathletes in August.

Thanks so much for all of you help...stay in touch.

Yes, that would be the goal I would set for two reasons, first you will have more confidence that you can accomplish all the distances regardless of how you feel going into each.  Second, there is a difference between racing and working out as the adrenaline ramps up and there is more cumulative fatigue as you go...

Hill repeats are riding up a hill or several hills over and over.  Riding on hills is the only way to get better at riding hills...

Thanks so much.  I will set my goals to get to 1.5x the length by race day.

Hill repeats don't sound fun at all!!!  Maybe a necessaty evil to achieve greatness.

And BTW, you didnt mention that you were riding in Italy.  That is AWESOME!!!  Best of luck to you and I will talk to you when you get home.

Oh, I have no doubt that they make you better, but with greatness comes pain...a lot of pain  =)

I would love to join you guys sometime, but I dont have a bike yet...I rented one for the race and plan to ride it a few times prior to race day.  Most of my time has been spent on the spin bike at the gym.

I am getting really excited about the race.  thanks to all of you for your advice.

If you were an offensive lineman I'm betting you're even more familiar with pain than most of us (giving AND getting).  I actually just did my first run with the Frisco tri club this evening and I highly recommend you try it.  I run around an 18 minute mile while the others are faster but it's all good.  I didn't even know I would enjoy it this much, but I did and I'll bet you would too.

TOTH is a flat course - no need for hill repeats. Just get some good miles in. I would suggest finding a bike group to go riding with to build your milage (indoor cycling is not the same). There are many good groups (an assortment of skill and speed levels) with the plano bicycling association.

www.planobicycling.org They ride on saturday mornings out of north Plano.

If you care to discuss just send me an email at [email protected]

TexTriGuy...
I dont own a bike, and will be renting one from Richardson Bike Mart, so most of my training is in the gym.  I have scheduled two weekends so far the get the bike prior to the race, and plan to get on the road with a group.  thanks so much for that advice.

PDS...
pain is VERY different in football.  1) we wear pads, and 2) as a lineman, I only ran 5-10 yards at a time...and If I ever ran more than that, we better score, so I can take a break  =)  The friscot tri club is right down the street from me, and I am very interested in trying it.  I am also interested in the TTT, and the plano cycle club that Triguy was talking about.

Another question for you all...well, I need some advice.

I have found that my swim is really tough to train for.  I have been training for 4 weeks now.  My bike is getting better with time (I am riding at 20mph at the gym), and I just ran 2 miles without stopping...the most I have ever run at once.  I can see improvement in those two diciplines, but do not seem to be getting any "better" at my swim.  I can swim about 150m without stopping, but then my endourance gets worse and worse.  I end up only able to swim 50m at a time...so not only am I frustrated, I am at a loss.

Any suggestions?

Thnaks again to all of you for your comments, suggestions, and support.  I look forward to racing beside you all someday!!!

Just trying to add some humor; I'm sure the pain is different but I'm also sure you can handle this pain.  As far as the swimming I have similar problems.  Although I don't like the advice I received it is true that the more you do the better you will get at it.  I setup my swims so my longest chunk was at the beginning, when I had the most energy.  Then I would add 25 on to the distance each week, which seemed to work for me up to my expected race distance at 300.  You might try that and see how it works for you.

If you've only been training 4 weeks you are seeing good progress, but some of these things just take time to develop and improve.  You're doing great, just keep truckin.

Where do you swim?

Like JeepFleep/Aaron said... it's all about form... once you have the form, the endurance will come. If you don't have any formal swim training and you are just in there doing it... your form might need some help.

Getting one-on-one coaching lessons is money well spent.

That is great advice.  I will try to work on distance rather than time.  I will add 25m each time until I get to the 350m required for the TOTH.

Karen and Aaron,
Form?  I think Andy says it best when he says, "I thought a brink was my swim technique..."  I will try and work on my form, and maybe look into lessons.

Thanks so much everyone!!!

Well, a bike is probably #1 priority... then swim lessons.

Look into renting TI (Total Immersion) from your library. It's a great (and free) place to start for working on swim technique.
