Subject: Any OWS locations in Central Jersey?
Do you know of any Open Water Swim locations in Central Jersey? I am having trouble finding anything within an hour of the Princeton, NJ area. Thanks!

I am familiar with the Hopewell Quarry, but would rather not have to pay for a multi-use membership when I know I would only go a couple times.

I live in the area. Best bet is Hopewell or, if you want cheap, go with the CGI Swims about an hour south.
Not too much else that I know of, but if you find something...let me know!

the jersey shore tri club swims are a little over an hour, several per week - http://JSTRIClub.org(manesquan river, barnegat bay)  they move to ocean in July.

Also, sandyhookers has swims a little over an  hour - http://Sandyhookers.org(navesink river)

My son keeps a calendar of open water opps in facebook:

Does anyone know if the OWS that Sandyhookers or JSTI have in the rivers and bays are best done with a wetsuit? I want to get some open water practice in - as I have none up until now - but I don't own a wetsuit and have no plans to buy one. Any thoughts on where to try? I live in Central Jersey but I am willing to drive, and unfortunately I can't do Thursday nights...

if you can tough out the cold water - probably low 70s now - sans wetsuit - power to you.  at teh swims i have been at, barnegat bay and navesink, there have been some folks w/o wetsuits.  i prefer to wear one but that's me - if it's cold, that is one less discomfort for me to worry about.

the ocean swims will be particularly cold - it could be below 60 still in the early morn - and that varies from beach to beach and with the tide.  especially in the ocean i would prefer wetsuit but again that's just me.  you can also build up your cold water fitness.  some people never wear them and lots of swim meets disqualify you from placing if you wear one.

You could take a drive and head up to Round Valley or Spruce Run Reservoir. It's a bit of a drive from the Princeton area, but there is a roped off section where you can swim (with wetsuit if desired) water not deep, can't go far, but nothing better for simulating a lake than a lake. I think a state park pass for the year is around $50 and then family can hike/swim/etc too

Thanks for all the responses! I wish I had the flexibility to visit some of these places... I know an hour is not that far, but with all the planned events for our young children, I couldn't work it out. I have resigned to the fact that race day at the Philly Tri (sprint) will be the first time I actually swim in my new wetsuit. The good news is it fits, and I've been able to do a fair amount of pool swimming (without the wetsuit), including in the Princeton Community Park 50 meter pool.

I would seriously recommend you practice in your wetsuit at the pool (with proper cleaning afterwards) so that you are comfortable wearing it prior to race day. I have seen too many people with issues on race day that could have easily been avoided. Just tell the kids at the pool that you are auditioning for the new "Creature from the Black Lagoon" movie

I like the "Creature from the Black Lagoon" idea! I've spent a lot of time at pools in my life, and have never once seen somebody in a pool in their wetsuit. Wasn't sure I wanted to be the first. Embarassed

Haha no worries - I've done it before at a public pool I just tried to go at a time of day that I was sure not many people would be there (for me, that was lunchtime on a weekday).  I didn't get to do an OWS before my first tri, but I was really glad I had at least swam in my wetsuit - if you have a full-sleeve one, your stroke will feel different.

Have fun, make faces at the little kids, and don't forget your body glide!

So it seems there really aren't any OWS spots in central jersey (unless you want to drive an hour)?

There's a new option on Friday's at Peddie Lake in Hightstown NJ. Here's the info from Jersey Area Multisport:

Jersey Area Multisport as proud to annouce the beginning of a regular open water swim workout at Peddie Lake in Hightstown. This will be a United States Triathlon (USAT) Sanctioned Clinic every Friday night beginning July 3rd at 6:30pm, lasting until the middle of September.

Here is your opportunity to practice in open water! We'll run waves of swimmers 10-20 at a time who will swim a 400 yard course and then exit the water while the next wave takes their turn, the waves will rotate like this for approximately one hour (+/- 4 x 400 yards per workout).

All swimmers will either have to be USAT members or pay the one day USAT member fee ($10), daily and yearly membership forms will be available at registration. We will also be asking for a $5-$10 donation per swimmer per workout to help cover the guard and equipment costs.

Every Friday by 4:00pm we will post the water quality test results along go/no go decisions on the swim due to weather or water quality at www.jerseyareamultisport.com.

Thanks for this note as was looking for options. Jersey Area Multisport website had plenty of info regarding the peddie lake swim.

This looks perfect. Thanks so much for posting. By the way, I did end up with the Philly Tri as my first wetsuit swim - thankfully I had no major issues and enjoyed the buoyancy.

As an update there were only 5 people at the 1st Peddie Lake swim on 7/3 (I'm assuming the holiday kept lots of folks away) but a friend of mine did make it and said they had a 400 yard or so rectangle with buoys set up and the water temp was more than fine.

On their website they have a map of the swim course. Did your friend say how it was?

He said it was good but there was only 5 of them so it wasn't crowded at all. He said the buoys were set up well and helped him work on his siting. The folks who were there were all (except for him) for time OWS'ers. He said they were all average type of 2:00/100 pace or slower swimmers.

No problem. Since I just had a race yesterday I'm going to have to skip tomorrow but I plan to be out there next Friday.

If anyone interested I did the Hightstown OWS training this evening through Jersey Area Multisport. Course was good, 400 yards and very well marked with buoys. About 8/9 people were there, water was good temp, about half people had wetsuits. Was able to get in 4 sets, approx 4-5min break btw each set.

Yes, I'm a Montgomery "home boy."

Here's a 3rd opinion on the Hightstown OWS. I am glad I went, it was a good swim in clean enough water with a good group of people. Brian and Bob, it was good to meet you both. I hope to be back next week.

I'll probably do it without the wetsuit next week, but I'm glad I had another opportunity to swim with it on today.

Tony, nice to meet you also and I agree that it was a nice group of people at the swim. Bob, sorry you did the last set by yourself, I hope to be back next week also.
