I am using a Cannondale CAAD 8 Road bike for my races and would like to add aerobars. I am new to triathlon and am slowly adding on as needed.

1. What key issues should I make sure of to make sure it fits properly?
2. Which manufacturer would you recommend?
3. Which specific aerobar clipon?

Profile Design Karbon Strykes are quite popular.

Fit? You could go and be professionally fit ($) or if you are a bit savy, do some "googling" on bike fit with aerobars and either attempt the fit yourself or with the help of a friend (the friend would be able to best assess angles and take pictures so you could then make adjustments).

I have Profile Design GT Jammers on my Cervelo Soloist...but then again, I'm only 5'6" and the Jammers are more of a shorty style aerobar specifically designed for road bike use.  I tried a more traditional type of aerobar (PD Airstrykes), but the reach felt way too stretched for my roadie position.  But I guess it could work if you're taller.

One thing to consider is the distance you are riding. We had a friend that had put the jammers on his bike, but quickly switched when he started doing ironman distance racing.

If I may ask, what did he switch to?

That doesn't look comfortable. Looks like you would be putting a lot weight on your upper body.

He switched to the Profile Design Aerolites - he really likes them and is very comfortable.

They take some getting used to, but realistically the weight is going to be on your elbows, and supported by your frame, so it is comfortable.  The hard part is the more twitchy feel you get on the bike, when your arms are so close together.  And if you are carrying extra weight around the middle (like I am still these days), it is a little harder to get a full breath.  But I love the aeros.  I use Syntace now, but I used to use Profile Airstrykes, which I liked for the flip up position on the elbow pad.  It let me use the top of the bars.  I just felt bad having the additional weight on my carbon fiber bike.

What did he switch to?  I have PD Jammers on my road bike and was planning on using them for IMWI in 2010.  Thanks.

as people said, it takes a lil to get used to...i find it a lot more comfortable than being in the drops. i like my elbows closer together. the weight really is distributed thru your elbows and seat. once i get a ff seat post i will be at maximum comfort and geometry. Steerin response is jittery at first but is easily learned.  i feel much faster in the aeros and less like a sail as you can actually feel the less resistance.

back to the OP- go to the LSB and feel out a few different types of aero bars. Some like the straight bars and some like the curved. it's all going to be pretty much personal preferance and wrist comfort, i think.

I don't understand this.  When I'm in aero my forearms bear the weight, my elbows are not on the rests at all.   I have the Profile Designs Aerolite bars.   I actually find that my weight is more evenly distributed and end up with less pain in my hands/arms when I use aero than when I don't.

ditto- i think they may have generalized where the arms rest on the pads

He switched to the Profile Design aerolite and he has told us they are awesome and that he is very comfortable.

I'm in a similar boat in that I'd like to add the aero bars for some training and racing. I also want to use the road bike setup for other rides.

I have a CAAD 9 5 road bike and my LBS recommended perhaps buying another seat and post. I use one seat for road and one for aero. That way, provided I mark the proper height, I dont have to get the bike properly fitted everytime I want to change. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
