In general though, I would rarely swim more than 500m and instead break things up into sets instead of straight swimming. You can have a look back through my logs for some of the workouts that we do but here is a typical example (from yesterday):
200 choice (at least 50% non-free) 300 drill as 50's of dead man's float, log roll, 12 second drill, one arm, 3 phase scull, shark fin power drill 3x100 as 100's of pull, kick, swim 2x{ 300 pull (buoy between ankles) 500 as 100 drill, 150 long, strong and technical, 150 descend by 50's, 100 kick} cool down
