Subject: Lakefront Days Triathlon at Cleary Lake
I am a new user and am wondering if there is anyone out there who has done or is doing the Lakefront Days Tri in Prior Lake? This is going to be my first tri and I am four weeks into training. I'm getting pretty excited, but also a little nervous about how everything works. I was also wondering if anyone has advice on using gel packets or any other supplement during long bike rides or runs. For now, I have just been drinking Gatorade and water. Thanks!

Depends what you mean by long.  Anything under an hour I usually just stick with water and maybe gatorade endurence if it is really hot.  What kind of distances are you talking about?

My longest run so far has been about 6 miles - that took me almost an hour - my longest bike so far has been 15 miles which also took about an hour. I don't feel like I really need anything else, just curious what other people do. Thanks.

For me, it is all based on the temp. If it is cool like Buffalo was this year, I hardly need any hydration during a sprint. Maybe a shot of water at each transition and a gel on the bike, but I bet I could even get by without that. If it is 80 and sun, I make sure to have some gatorade at each transition AND on the bike. I'm also a fan of the "2nd breakfast"... a banana or Clif Bar and a gel just prior to the pre-race meeting.

I did Lakefront 2 years ago and really enjoyed it. It is laid back and a little smaller. They had lots of volunteers and it seemed pretty well run. I wasn't a fan of Cleary Lake -- it was murky -- but I recall it being a shorter swim. One note - when I did this race, they deemed the water too warm to use wetsuits. Be sure you can do the OWS without a wetsuit if needed.

I recall it being a decent bike course and a real nice run course through a county park.

Overall, though, good race, and I'd definately do it again someday if it fit into my schedule.

One thing that a lot of people do for bike rides is to tape a gel packet on the top tube of the bike.  Tape the tab down securely so you can just rip the packet off and squish it into your mouth.

For sprint races, I usually have a gel a little bit before the start of the race and one about half way through the bike ride.  For olympic races, I have a pre-race gel, one shortly after I get on the bike, and one shortly before the end of the bike.  Maybe that's overdoing it, but I'll just say that I've never regretted doing that.

I will second the "second breakfast".  I do that as well.

I am about your speed and don't both with nutrition for a 15 mile bike or 6 mile run, usually, during training.  However, I would take a gel or something similar during a sprint race.  I like to do it in the last mile or two of the bike, with enough time to suck it down and get a good drink of water.  Really helps me finish up that run and I always burn through a ton more energy on a race day.

Good luck on your first race!
