Subject: Presta valve issues
Hello everyone, I am a newbie and the forums here are very helpful.........got a new bike recently, and am having issues filling my tires.  This is my first time with a "presta valve", and I have the adapter for my pump.  However, it seems like even though I get my tire to the pressure I want (and a little over), when I take the pump off the valve and try to tighten the tiny screw on the valve, I lose a lot of air.  Am I just not doing it quick enough?  The subject of my post was going to be "presta valves suck" but I'm trying not to judge too quickly, maybe it's operator error?  Thanks all!

It should only release air if you press it down or push to the side.  If you just screw the top down you  should not be losing any air

Make sure you are only TWISTING the screw to tighten it.  You don't need to exert any downward pressure....just twist.

I gave up trying to use the presta valves to fill the tire, instead I buy the small brass adapters ($1.00) that screw on the valve stem and convert the presta to the schrader valve.  You get the stability and airtight seal of the presta valve but can still fill your tires to 120 psi with the air compressor.

I have found the presta valves to be touchy when removing the adapter.  Just keep a light touch.

I also started using the valve adapters to convert to a schrader valve after having the same problem of air leaving the tire when I would remove the bike pump.
