Subject: Goggles - making water go into my sinuses
I live on a lake and have been swimming distance for years without goggles mainly because I never have trained in a pool.  I am doing my first triathlon so I have been training using the gear I will wear in the race including a new pair of goggles.  When ever I take a breath the goggles cause water to drain into my nose and it is causing me to have some sinus issues.

I cant be the only person that has had this problem.  I tried goggles about 10 years ago and it happend then too.  Maybe its my technique or something but I have tried adjusting them and it still happens.

Can anyone give me advice on how they were able to stop this from happening?

how do goggles make water get into your sinuses? or should I say, how do you not get water in your nose swimming w/o goggles? What's your technique look like?

FWIW, I always get water in my nose when I swim. I never really feel it leaking in, but some always gets in there.

I can't explain how goggles would cause this but I guess as I turn my head to breathe the water that is running off my face must flow differently with the goggles on.  It just drains into my nose off of the goggles.  It doesn't seem to bother me swimming without goggles even though I always get some water in my nose like everybody - but this is much worse and I didnt know if anyone else has had this problem.
I have been doing 1-2 mile swims for over 10 years and never have felt a need to wear goggles in my lake.  I used swimming to supplement my training for marathons and mma. Now I have bought a bike and bring on the triathlons!  I am really enjoying the training.  It is a nice change and I want to do things right.  I'm sure I will figure this thing out but I thought it might be a common issue that some folks would have experienced as well...

I had issues with water in my sinuses until I started concentrating on exhaling thru my nose & mouth. It won't keep the water out but it keeps it from getting very far....

Are goggles required equipment in a race?

If Goggles are not specifically required you do not need to wear them. If you can swim the distance without and want to go for it. Is there a reason you decided to use them now?

Are you breathing in your mouth, but the water just goes into your nose at the same time?  If you're breathing with your nose, that's def a problem.

You might need to try different goggles or maybe try a nose clip.  I've worn goggles where the stream of water gets directed in different ways.  It may be the shape of your nostrils?  My husband has a narrow nose with nostrils that are more on the side of his nose, and I wondered about that when I first read your note.  If that's the case, the nose clip might be the only option.

I will second trying new goggles. Are you using the OW type or the regular swim ones? I could see some of the bigger OW goggles creating some kind of draining pattern, but not really the smaller pool swim type.

I spent all winter congested and sneezing from what I thought was a pool water chemical allergy. Someone suggested I try a nose clip and since then I've not had a problem. Maybe it'll work for you too. Good luck!

It says so on the Augusta half ironman website.  I would prefer to go without since that is what I have always been used to.  If its optional I would like to find that out.

I am definitely going to buy some new ones.  I am not sure what the OW type is but these are big.  They are called Barracuda Predator Goggles that I bought at the All 3 Sports triathlon store here in Atlanta.  I think i will get a pair of the smaller ones.  If that doesnt work I am going without them like I have for so long.

Thanks for the advice.
