So i had my first sprint race this past weekend and encountered a few problems and thought maybe some advice from a few of you could help my next event.

(1) T1 bike mounting- my mount line was slightly inclined uphill and made for a difficult engagement of my pedals. (i was in proper gears in prep for the hill) the argument of starting with shoes on the bike comes into play. I'm very comfortable with a running mount in bare feet, but is it better to strap shoes on 1st and slip n slide on engagement or is it better to bare run the mount and deal with shoes while you're at speed? (i have single strap tri shoes)

(2) T2 the running shoes- since this was a sprint race, i tossed the idea of wearing socks...my feet were damp coming off the bike and made for a sticky foot insertion into my running shoes, even after a quick wipeoff. What also made things a pain was that my saucony insoles wrinkled up when i put my foot in and created such a discomfort on the run, that at approx mile 1.2 i had to hop on a curb and rip out the insole and run without em. (which inevitably let to a nasty blister on my right foot-fun!). should i pop the feet out of the shoes prior to the dismount to assist in foot drying? i lost precious time in the T messing with my insole and lost pace on the run due to the folded insole...

what advice can you offer me?

1) It depends on the course and run-up.  But FOR ME ...... 99% of the time I will put my shoes on in transition and run with the bike.  Trying to ride up an incline with your feet on top of the shoes and attempting to get into them while climbing is an accident waiting to happen IMO.

2) Have a towel ready to dry your feat off, possibly put on socks in wet races, "powder" the shoes or get different shoes.

hmmm never thought of the powder tactic...i think i'll try poppin the feet out next race and running bare from the dismount to air the moisture off my feet- hopefully that'll asst in a better insertion

i think the cycling shoe issue relates to me depending on hitting the clip in perfectly each time...if i miss, get aggravated and lose speed as my foot slips off the pedal due to the hard plastic bottoms (unlike my rubberized mtb shoes- which grip anywhere)

I know it's a sprint so you are trying to shave off time anywhere you can, but what's so bad about wearing socks?  They can't take longer than 2-3 seconds to put on.

I wore socks in my first tri and was 2nd/50 in my division in T1 and 1st/50 in T2, so they can't take up that much time.

assuming you can run in your shoes sockless without too much issue (some are harder due to seam placement, etc).

put some baby powder in yours shoes (a little more than you think you need), and shake them around. this will help your feet slide in a lot easier and will also help from getting blisters on the run.

as for the feet on the shoes vs clipping in, thats up to you, but if we are talking a short (under 40 feet) hill, i would personally run with my bike to the top and then jump on, have done this in a few races and it always ends up going a whole lot better than the peopel trying to get on at the bottom and then struggling to get up.

Whether you're wearing socks or not, popping your feet out of your cycle shoes before dismount is a very easy way to shave a few seconds off T2.
