So, I am considering buying a wetsuit but I wonder if it is really necessary.  If the temperature is a certain level they won't let you wear it anyway right?  So unless I am planning on doing a "cold weather" tri why buy one?  I don't want to train with something I cannot use race day and I don't want to spend the $$ on that when I can buy other gear.  What is the concensus here?  I am a newbie so sorry if this seems dumb.....

Yes, you want a wetsuit if you're going to do more than a couple tris and do it over a year or so. I picked one up during a closeout and I'm glad I did. I didn't think I would wear it that much but it's ended up being used more often than not and 60 degree water is perfect for a full sleeve wetsuit.

If you want to see what kind or test it out first, rent one and see for yourself if you want to buy it.

Rent or borrow one to try, you'll be shocked at the benefit you get from its buoyancy. It's not all about temps.

What length race are you doing?

I am doing the HIM florida 70.3 next May and then, hopefully, the Ironman Madison in Sept 2010.  I just want to make sure I will be able to actually use the suit.  I hear the water is pretty warm in Florida and Wisconsin in September should be ok......I know I can get a wetsuit for not that much but if I can't use it racing why buy it?  Like I said I'm a rookie so I am trying to figure things out. Thanks

During the summer, the lake temps around here get comfortable enough to go without a wetsuit BUT I still always wear it because I do most of my OWS by myself. The extra bouyancy gives me peace of mind that if I have a cramp or other problem I can pretty much float with little effort.
