yep,
Subject: Saturday Ride out in Westminster

Figured I'd just copy the email I sent out to a few local friends and see if anyone else had interest in doing a ride this Saturday around 930ish in Westminster.  Plan on doing around 60ish miles of the Tour De Carroll course.

"Guys and gal--
I wanted to formally extend the invitation to everyone and well
anyone who would like to do the ride this weekend on Saturday around
930ish.  Figuring the weather is supposed to get a little warmer (mid
to high 80's) I wouldn't want to fry too much out there.  I've been
doing a little route looking at the closest gas stations around the
area we will be biking and there aren't a ton to be quite honest.  We
will have to strategically place our re-fueling stations so we don't
die out there.

Feel free to invite anyone else you think would enjoy the ride.

Here is a map of the 2008 course which I believe is quite similar:
http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Tour-De-Carroll-2008

If you guys can let me know ASAP if you can/can't make it that would
be great.   Thanks

CJ"

I would love to be in on this but I have to head to Jarrettsville by 1:00. Maybe we could back it up to 7:00am.

Just kidding. I might try to get in half of the ride though. Need to think it through.

Ughh... alright fine Here is the location:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Westminster,+MD&daddr=39.584433,-76.996576&hl=en&geocode=&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=17&sll=39.583449,-76.996211&sspn=0.006268,0.013894&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=17

Its at the end of the route.  I was trying to get an interest before going into super big details.  I have one person interested from my friends but no one on here yet.  Figure they don't wanna do 3000-4000 ft of climbing.

Okay so I have so far is the following:

MrReber - Insert name

Dlaxman31 - CJ

Dolelicious - Christy

Scamp07 - Steve (maybe)

Is that it?  Figure we would meet around McDaniel College around 930ish or so.  There is a local church/middle school that is right next to the school.

Here is the address of the local church:

43 Monroe St

Westminster, MD 21157-4562

Let me know what you guys think.

Yeah I did it this past April.  I only did the 36 mile loop but I'm a much stronger climber now than I was back then.  We are taking several breaks through the ride.  Come on!!! you know you wanna join us.

I might, I'm doing a 50 miler Friday morning...i just had major IT band issues from some of those short but killer climbs. one of which I thought I was going to fall over backwards!  and then I was riding my road bike which climbed much better than the tri bike. We did the 62 mile ride...

** brushes dirt off your shoulder**  Sorry I forgot your a big deal

Do you know any re-filling stations (Gas stations) around miles 30-50 that we can get like water and Gatorade at?  I had a hard time finding stuff on Google maps.

Yes, remember use quotations "I'm kind of a big deal".   Actually, the ride messed me up for my training for IMLP. I had to avoid any hills for a month!

I remember most of it being in neighborhoods, and when we did the ride, not the best stops either. I really can't tell you if there are any stops along the way, since its all basically neighborhoods/farmland.

It really wasn't the nicest metric I've done. MUCH prefer the Civil War Century.  Now if you wanted to do that, I might be up for it!  Except it starts in Thurmont. But, its a super super ride.  I'll definitely be doing that in September.  Eat a Peach is also fun, but its pretty challenging as well.  I think thats the first week in August?  I love doing the supported long rides. You don't have to bring anything with you!

FWIW: It's just over 4000 ft of climbing...

CJ - The only thing I could find is Taney Town Tavern at our mile 45:

Taneytown Tavern LLC

5525 Taneytown Pike
Taneytown, MD 21787-1926
(410) 756-4949

If we go past the intersection with 194 at TaneyTown, there is a sheetz too.  It's like a mile out of the way but probably worth it

We'll just have to ride fast so it doesn't take long enough to require more beverage than we can carry to get to mile 47..

Over that kind of distance, I wasn't thinking it would be that bad either but I figured putting then # out there would let everyone judge for themselves how difficult they though it would be

Congrats on the green star!!

So what, if you have the 11/27 you think it'd be too easy??

Yes.
I don't have an 11/27...... yet!!
But I can tell you 11/23 + skyline drive = fail.
It's good you did that, so that people can get a good idea of how to plan and prepare.

I might be a little late if it's 9:30am.
I was just reminded that I registered for a 10k at 8:00am that morning.
If we did 10:00am I would be on time for sure.
40 min to race, 5 to get on the road, 45 to get to Westminster according to gmaps.
Just don't want to be holding up the group.
And don't worry, I'll be beaten up from the race so you guys can pwn me and leave me in the dust.

I'm going to have to pass. I'm just not good at the end of the day. LOL

Seriously, I have family up from SC and we're having a big cookout at my sister's in Jarretsville at 2:00 and I can't risk being late.

James, what 10K are you doing? I might try to run some type of race that morning.

I'd say anything around 15-18ish.  Considering it has some hills I'm thinking we'd avg a little lower.

For what it's worth, I actually did the Tour de Carroll (63 mile loop) back in April or whenever while training for Eagleman.  There are a couple of tough climbs, but I was able to make it up them all.  (I do have a triple, but I'm still a relatively new/weak cyclist...I got my bike one year ago today!).  I don't remember virtually anywhere to stop for a break.  They had two stops set up for the ride; one was randomly at the side of  the road in by a barn and the other was at a park.  I don't really remember any gas stations or anything.  Most of the ride is pretty rural.

I'd ride with (behind) you guys, but since J's bike is broken and he can't come, I think I'd rather sleep in and then ride from home later.

ETA:  here are my BT mentor's stats from the ride that shows the elevation: http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/8080406/>

We can plan "meet up" points on the route so those who want to go faster can and then we can all re-join later down the route.  That way no one has to feel like they are holding anyone back and others don't have to worry that they are dropping people.   We can exchange #s before hand too.
