Subject: Holy Crap! What Now! The final week...

Im about 1/2 way through my training for a sprint in September and I decided to see where I stood.  I signed up for the Keene NH Tri on 7/11/09.  I feel fine about the bike and swim.  I can push a 10 minute mile in a stand alone 10K but Im doubtful I ll have the gas to do that after biking and swimming.

So It's sort of short, with 1/4 mile swim and only 8 mile bike.  The 5k run is what makes me nervous.  So this weekend and the rest of this week, should I stick to my plan (see my logs if you want)?  Train hard early and rest the last 3-4 days?  I have not really been training enough to taper per say...

My goal... around 1:10-1:15... that't the middle down in last years results, but my ultimate goal is to not stop at all during the race.

Also, how do you stop from throwing up from nerves all week? Smile

I am not sure why you are doing a triathlon before you are done with the training plan that is supposed to get you in shape for it.

That being said, most plans have at least a slight taper in them even for a sprint and you could follow the taper recomended in your plan as if you were in the last week of the plan.  A sprint is super sprint is short enough that if you can survive the swim you should be able to finish it, even if you have to walk some of it.  In general, it is a good idea to train for the event you are going to do and then do it 8).

A taper for a sprint or supersprint is typically a day of no workout or a lite workout like 10 min bike or run.

It's not too late.  You should be toeing the start line rested and ready to race, so go very light the day or two before the race.

If your goal is to not walk at all during the run, then practice running v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y to stimulate your mind and body what the run should feel like.  It's easy to start running at a very easy pace and think "this is too easy, I'm going to go a little harder..." and you need to practice resisting that temptation.

Nerves?  Spend some time reflecting on the progress you've made.  The night before my Ironman, I sat down and wrote out some thank you notes to people who have helped me with training and race preparation.  Was a nice way to not obsess over last minute gear choices or "I haven't trained enough" thoughts.

I guess its sort of a catch 22... I know I need to pace myself on the run... but it is a race... I would prefer to run the whole thing.  However after reading a lot of posts here, there is some support for a planed walk every x minutes etc to allow you to keep a stronger pace when running... I guess its really just the time at the end... but still... I would feel more MACHO if I could run the whole thing.

I would just consider it part of my training. You are doing it for experience.  It's been said on here the many people walk.  Try not to, but if it happens, then it happens.
