Subject: Anyone use a shoe horn in transition?
It was suggested to me to have my running shoes tied, ready to put on and use a shoe horn to slip them on in transition.  Any thoughts?

Spend the $5 or so to buy some Yankz or other similar speed lace system.

Shoe horn just sounds silly to me.

I guess that would help if you are having a really difficult time getting your shoes on, but what if you lose the shoe horn?  Then you waste time looking for the shoe horn, or untying and retying your shoes.

Why not get elastic laces such as Yankz! or SpeedLaces instead?

What they said.  I think I cut my transition times in half when I got my yankz.  Also, just to ensure an easy slip on, I put body glide around the edge of my shoes. (Keep in mind, this is for a sockless run).

i don't even know how to use a shoe horn. . i guess i don't see how it can possibly help you put shoes on or why one would be needed.  yes, yankz = awesome.  i think they are more comfortable than regular laces too.

Is this 1960? I am not young by any means, 33, but not old and I haven't seen a shoe horn since I was lil. My best suggestion would be to practice bricks, i.e. go for a bike, I don't care how far, then hop off your bike, practice your transition and start your run as soon as possible, preferable less than 2-4 mins. Look at your local running store or tri shop for some elastic quick laces like Yanks. This will help you figure out how tough it is to slide your shoes on when your feet at swollen and you are tired. It isn't tough, just practice.

Yeah, I got me an idea. Expect to see them in the back of Triathlete Magazine in a few months. Ti or Carbon Fiber shoehorns made right here in the USA, they will be branded as Tru Shu Horn. $89 each. You can get the Ti one laser engraved. I might even make a Nickelplated Steel w/ emeralds and rubies model for the old school tri pimps.
