Subject: good OWS locations?

Just wondering if any of you can recommend a good location for OWS in Southern California.  I live in San Dimas but am willing to commute a reasonable distance.  I already checked in Puddingstone Lake, but the swimming beach is really small and over crowded.  Any help will be great.

Hermosa Beach-Manhattan Beach pier-to-pier swim is fantastic.  Sunday mornings at 8AM there are dozens of triathletes doing that one.  Most start at Hermosa Beach pier and swim towards Manhattan Beach.

Thursday nights at Venice beach I know some people that swim regularly.

LA Tri club also has a bunch of swims through the week - the schedule is posted on their website.

Great, that's exactly what I was looking for. I think I'll try Hermosa beach.

I was just out there yesterday at around 5:15 pm. It wasn't too choppy (although mornings are usually calmer), and the water was nice and warm. I also observed a few groups of dolphins after I got out.

Like the previous poster said, LA Tri club does a morning group swim at Redondo (2 400m sets, geared towards beginners) Sundays at 11:00, and a longer one at Manhattan Beach (1, 1.5 or 2 miles, for more experienced swimmers) Sundays at 8:00.

Corona Del Mar.  You can park at the top of the hill so that you don't have to pay to park.  The buoys are approx. 100 yds apart.  OCtri club swims there on Saturday mornings and I think on Thursday nights.  You can check it on their website.  I have just shown up on two random Saturdays and found someone on the beach to swim with.  One time water was choppy and rough, but the next time it may as well have been a bathtub it was so calm.  (Did see a lot of stingrays as we walked out, though.)

Went out to Hermosa this morning and swam from pier to pier.  Beautiful beach, lots of other swimmers, and plenty of space.  Thanks for the recommendation.

My wife and I were there as well this morning (with two others from the Disney Tri Team)...swam from Hermosa pier to a couple guard towers beyond the Manhattan Beach pier...last two mile swim before my IM.  (Then managed to stumble while jogging back up the beach and pulled my hamstring, but that's another story.)

We do that swim periodically...perhaps we'll get a chance to say "hello" sometime.

The two piers are about 1.8 miles apart.  There's a "standard" swim from the south side of the Hermosa pier to the north side of the Manhattan Beach pier that is 2 miles.  But the beauty is, of course, that you can cut the swim short and exit the water at any point between the two piers.

As Todd said, Hermosa to Manhattan Pier is "about" 2 miles.   A bit shorter.   But people also swim a 1 mile course (don't remember the street, it's at the big yellow house with green windows, there's a buoy in that general area) and 1.5 mile course (at 22d street).  The 2 milers are usually training for IM or the pier to pier.   The majority of folks do the one mile option

Last month I swam P2P (starting on the n. side of Hermosa pier) with my GPS tagger:  http://www.a-trip.com/tracks/view/24788

Unfortunately I lost the signal a few 100m before rounding the MB pier, so it looks like I swam straight under the pier, which I definitely do not advise.  The golfers seem to indicate where I dove under the break.

Next time I am out there, I'll do it again for a better map.
