You're not too big.  If you've been following a tri workout and can do the distance then go for it.

I've posted this video of Duane's Triathlon before but it is good inspiration - he NEVER quit!  To top it off he repeated that same triathlon the next year.

For me, it's not so much about my size but about whether or not I have a reasonable expectation of finishing within the time limits.  I'm 5'2" and 235 (down from 257).  I did my first sprint tri on 5/31, and although I finished, I didn't get an official time because it took me too long on the bike.  I've only been "off the couch" since mid-February and right now my stand-alone times for the swim/bike/run are usually right on the border of the time limits (for those that are posted).  I've decided to keep training but not to register for another one until I know I can finish within a reasonable timeframe.  That's just what's best for me.

Check out the Clydesdale & Athenas forums.  You will find a lot of people there who do amazing things!

Check out the forum for Clydes/Athenas down about halfway down the front page (in the "Other Resources" under Ironman and above challenges, I think?). You'll find lots of people who are bigger than your average pro kicking the heck out of tris! Besides, at many races you get your very won category - sweet, huh?!

Congratulations on finishing. The thing you need to keep in mind is you finished, you didn't give up. Speeding up to a "reasonable timeframe" will come. At the very least plan on doing the same race next year no matter what, you know you can finish.

If you can do the distance, do it.  Don't live with regrets.

If I were you, I would totally go for it.

A few years ago, Kate Harding wrote an article called "The Fantasy of Being Thin."  While I don't agree with many of her views, I found the core idea of that article to be fairly powerful -- the idea was that people tend to waste a lot of time and opportunities by saying "When I'm thin, I'll do _____," when in reality, they could have done those things all along.  And I've found in my own weight-loss experiences that this holds doubly true for athletic activities.  I would catch myself thinking things like "I'm too big to go to the pool.  When I'm 20 pounds lighter, I'll go get a bathing suit," or "I'm too chubby to run.  If I lose some weight, then I can run."  It's doubly bad, because (1) it's not true, and (2) that kind of thinking sabotages one's attempts to lead a healthy lifestyle: if people are "too big" to exercise, how are they expected to lose extra fat?

So if I thought I could handle the distances, I would sign up for that tri.  And I wouldn't use my size as a metric of whether or not to sign up -- I would make that decision based on my athletic ability and what performance gains I could reasonably expect to make in the available time I had for training.  There are people bigger than you who have totally owned tris in the past, as well as a lot of people half your size who would drown halfway through the swim, never mind running more than a quarter-mile

I second everything said before - I started training with 326 and finished my first Tri at 303 and the second one at 301. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise - it's a journey! Good job !!!

Congrats on your weight loss!

If you are healthy enough to do it, I will add my voice to those telling you to do it.  For a long time, I played the "in another 10,15,20 lbs, I'll do it" game.  I finally got fed up and just did my first tri recently.  I will admit that at 6'1" and 255 (down from 270), I was definitely one of the bigger ones there and made for a delightfully large obstacle for people to run around during the last leg.  On the other hand, I was not the biggest by a long shot.  He crossed the line last but got the biggest applause, by far, out of any of the contestants.

I say go for it! I always have several friends that were heavy enough they could not run, doctors orders, and they still finished, now they have dropped the weight and have started running.

Triathlon is a sport, sports are supposed to be fun! Go out and rock your race, at your speed, having fun is more important than winning!

You are not too big! GO FOR IT!

Triathletes come in all shapes and sizes. I know I respect anyone of any size who is out there racing!

'Too big' is a relative term, so if you can complete the distance sign up and have fun. In the end we all are just competing against ourselves so go for it and best of luck.

Thanks, ump107.  I've got my eye on two local sprints in mid-Sept and early Oct.  I'm continuing to train and hope to do one or the other depending on my progress by then.  I improved greatly from Feb-May, and while the improvement has slowed, I'm still working hard and seeing some good results.

To the OP, I forgot to mention that when I did my sprint in May, I'd ordered a t-shirt from www.cafepress.com to wear that said "Let's see you do this at MY weight."  To me it says that I may not be the fittest competitor, but I certainly put forth just as much if not more effort to finish.  Best of luck to you!

I did my first tri around 255 pounds.

I am now around 200 and, at the sprint distance anyway,  beat the skinny guys in my age group.  Mwahahaha.

The point is don't use your weight as an excuse.  So long as you have the health to do this, do this.

The only caveat is make sure you have a physical first.

If you do your training and can complete the distances, there is no "too big".  Go for it!  : )

I started out at 330 and did my first tri at about 275.  Biggest thing I found is to build your running correctly so you don't destroy your legs.  I know there are a far number of others in the clyde/athena form who also are big and tri.  The biggest difference I have found between myself and my friends who do tris, but aren't so big, is  needing to be extra mindful of how your  body is feeling.  The extra weight we carry on a run can cause injuries if you aren't in touch (true for all runners but more so for the bigger athletes).  In general following a 10% increase each week works pretty well.  I dropped it down to about 5% increase once I broke 60 minutes of running, but listen to your body.

I've completed two ironman races @ 255 lbs.  I done shorter races and marathons at 280 and I've done then lighter 240s and I can tell this:  the more you lose and the lighter you become, the more you will enjoy the races.

I hope you're not too big.  If you are, then I'm out of luck!!!

I'm pretty much in the same situation you are, about 10 pounds less in both regards.  My first tri is in 6 weeks.  I know I'm not going to finish in an hour, heck I'll be lucky to finish in 2 hours.  I just want to finish.

I set this goal as part of my weight loss and healthier lifestyle.  Going from a lifelong sedentary lifestyle to just completing a spring tri will be an amazing feet.  If I can do it, you can too.
