Subject: How Do You Avoid Razor Burn?
I started shaving my legs a couple weeks ago (much to the chagrin of my wife, but she's starting to like it now). I first shaved down with a shaver/beard trimmer to the lowest setting. Then I used Veet, followed the directions, and had great success.

The second time around, I used Veet again and ended up with red bumps all over. I'm assuming it's razor burn. So I did away with the Veet, got a nice shave gel, and used my wife's razor (with her permission ), but I can't get rid of the bumps.

Thankfully, most of the bumps are above the line of my shorts. But how do I keep them from coming altogether?

Any ideas?

Moisturizer an hour before you shave, and make sure that you don't have any goosebumps.  If your body hasn't gotten used to the shower/bath temp, you might have small goosebumps which will make for more razor burn.  Also, invest in a product called TendSkin.  It's sold in nail salons and is basically aspirin dissolved in alcohol.  It is the best for treating razor burn and for those annoying bumps on the hindparts that many of us get from working out in semi-wet spandex.

Get an exfoliator and use that before. That will help a lot.

Try St. Ives apricot scrub. Its cheap and very effective.

I'm training for an IM and can't afford to waste the ridiculus amount of time needed to shave my legs.  Shaved legs won't get me to the finish, training will.

Think of the weight you can save!!!

I doubt any 2nd place IM winner has ever said "I would have gotten 1st but I forgot to shave my legs this morning"

I started shaving my legs after taking a couple spills, one while biking and one while running. Cleaning the wound wasn't bad, but taking off the bandage and tape ... along with the leg hair that came with it ... hurt like a b***h. I can work through the pain that comes with training, but pulling that tape off of leg hair HURTS!

So I shaved.  And I like it.  Deal with it.

Welcome to the fun of shaving!

Always exfoliate first. I use either loofah or those nylon scrubby poofs. Otherwise you get ingrowns. I read somewhere to use cheap hair conditioner instead of shaving lotions/creams. I've been using it ever since. I buy the cheapest on sale (suave usually). It's thick, sticks to my legs, lets the razor glide easily and once rinsed, leaves my legs feeling moisturized. I like the moisturizing part since I get a bit of a rash if I apply lotion right after a shave.

Have fun & good luck!

But spending time on BT commenting on topics you don't know about will help you to finish?  Oh well, to each his own, I guess.

My hubby found that shaving only twice each week helped a lot!  Wednesdays and Sundays.

Just go for the gold and get your legs waxed... You only have to do it once every month or 2... It hurts, but dont be a baby!

Make sure you have a nice sharp razor, first of all.  Dull razors tend to give the worst razor burn.  Shave gel is definitely good, but I've been having good luck lately with applying a cheap fragrance-free moisturizer straight to my regions to be shaved in place of shaving gel.  (I tend to be allergic to a lot of fragrances and chemicals, so that sort of thing always exacerbates any irritation that's already there.)

I'm seconding all the comments re: exfoliation and moisturizing.  If there's any specific places that razor burn seems to be a recurring issue with (like for me, it's always at the leg/crotch interface region), applying a moisturizer that has a lot of vitamin E and then applying aloe a while later has had good results for me.

Go down hard and you will wish that you shaved. I learned this the hard way from my bike racing days ... which was later echoed by my doctor following a motorcyle accident. I'm not knocking those who don't, but don't know those who do.

That is the only raison for shaving. Unless you're a pro swimmer (gives you less drag in a swimming pool), it wont make you any faster in open water with 100 others agitating water around you. On the bike there is no real gain in aero, and on the run....

The only part that I shave is the bottom half of my face 2 or 3 times a week which is more then enoug for me. I don't mind the hair pull out the very rare times it happens. It realy doesn't happen often, maybe I not training hard enough.

But hey, it's your body. You're free to do what you want with it. And there are other purposes for shaving then just cleaning possible injuries. So feel free.

How many times are you wrecking where that is a major concern?  I've raced BMX for years and rode trail jumps with no shirt and had shorts on to go down tons of times.  I'm wondering what the exact advantage of shaving your legs is for wrecking?
