Howdy Guys!

I did Alcatraz on Sunday--wheee--lots of chop but a blast!

Unfortunately,  I have a lasting memory of my swim on the back of my neck likely due to not lubing it properly. That or maybe it was the camera I tied onto my wetsuit tail that was moving things around.

Anyway, I'm scheduled to do another swim in August so the training must continue. My question is this: does anyone have any good ideas for swimming with a pretty substantial neck rash? Or is it imperative that I just stick to the pool?

Thanks sooooo much!!

Sula

Aloe the rash liberally for the next several days. Swimming should be ok and unless your rash is bleeding profusely I would rather swim in open water (fresh or salt) than I would in a chemical filled pool. If it is bleeding openly you should probably avoid swimming until it heals.

Granted this is just what I do with rashes and it seems to work for me but I have also never had a wetsuit rash (yet - knock on wood)

Nope, not bleeding--just large and now crusty. Re Aloe--my bf put that on me last year and it stung like crazy. Hmmm...right now I'm going with neosporin only. But I'd be willing to try something that'll move things along, that's for sure.

Thanks!!

body glide is my savior.  i did my first OWS last week with a wetsuit and didn't use any body glide, came out an hour later with rash on neck, shoulders, and underarms.  it was painful to move in my wetsuit.  the next day i went out again with body glide liberally applied to affected areas and they didn't even bother me at all during the swim.

It's got a mild numbing agent and will help with the healing as well, plus it's made to go on larger areas than Neosporin. You can get it with aloe too

Aquaphor is pretty much designed to be put on chafing and other such wetsuit rashes.

I would stick to the pool.  All I remember about my Alcatraz wetsuit hicky is how much the darn salt water STUNG until I sweated it off.

No matter how bad your wetsuit hit you it should heal itself within a week unless you aggravate it further.  You can afford a couple of days out of the pool!

Thanks you guys for alllll the tips. Definitely pool only for a bit--this thing is nasty!  And then I may get some of the numb-n-glide goop!
