Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sigh. Here we go again. Here I sit icing my right hip. Okay, two weekends ago, I was doing a brick. About three minutes into the run - BAM - it felt like my right side just 'went out'. I kept running though and finished my three miles. I felt fine with the exception of a strong soreness in my right side. Next morning - ow! What is wrong with me? Just decided to swim that day. Well, swimming actually made it worse. Now my butt hurt. I decided to just do nothing for a few days. Well that got it better, but not completely and lo and behold the NYC Tri was just 3 weeks away. So off I went to my sports doctor, who also happens to be the Medical Supervisor for the NYC Tri. He is great. Anyway, he told me to ice it (doing it now), no running for a week, nothing intense, no bricks. Three advil, three times a day for a week to reduce inflammation. Said I should be better in about a week and to go ahead and do the NYC Tri. (He said he would see me at the finish line. I thought, "I do not want to see you anywhere near the finish line - for that would mean I would be in the Medical Tent!") Anyway, it has been getting better until yesterday when I decided to do a whole lot of weights and twisting ab work for some incredibly STUPID reason and now it hurts a lot again. Why am I an idiot?? Soooooo I am laying off. Just going to swim and spin and ice and Advil it. I want to see how it feels by Tuesday. What do you guys think? When do I call off the NYC Tri? Doc was right that it did feel a lot better until my crazy weights/abs day yesterday. You guys are experienced peeps and very experienced with tris so I thought I would ask. I was thinking that maybe if it didn't feel good by Tuesday to call off the tri. So sad for me. And to top it all off my depression has been kicking my butt. And I'm in the press. Argh! I was in Competitor magazine for being in the tri and now...this! This just makes my potential injury defeat all the worse. yours truly, dbw27 Edited to add: AND I just burned myself on the stove! Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ice it Stretching it NO MORE CRAZY WEIGHTS AND ABS...take your NSAIDs.....it will probab;y quiet down. Maintain your cardio on the bike and swimming if running hurts.....did you see Jordan Metzel by chance? |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi Socks! I also love that quote from the Devil Wears Prada. It is actually one of my favorite lines from the movie (prob because I can relate because I actually think that sometimes. Argh!) :-D Anyway, ice three times a day you think? Yes, no more crazy abs or weights. I don't know WHAT I was thinking. Swim and bike for me. Jordan Metzl is one of my doctors, but I actually went to go see Dr. Mark Klion (i love him! He actually spends more time with you than Dr. Metzl). Dr. Klion helped get rid of my runner's knee by making me go to Jackrabbit and getting tested for and buying new running shoes. Voila! It was like a miracle. Dr. Klion is doing the NYC Tri thing, along with my sports nutritionist who is also on the Medical Symposium for the NYC Tri. Now we just need a jellyfish expert to sit on the symposium as well! Ha! Ice, stretch, swim, bike? I hope that helps. :-) I have no IDEA what I did. Dr. Klion said, "overuse!" I was like - no no - no overuse - I'm not a runner - I don't run all of the time - I maybe run twice a week! It is my most UNtrained event (and actually surprisingly one of my best - maybe because I don't go crazy with it and hence overtrain.) Anyway, I hope this goes away. As you can see, I am just sitting here waiting for people to respond because I would be so so so sad if I had to defer. Sigh. thanks. dbw27 |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Not sure this will help but I had bad hip pain at the top of my iliac crest and nothing I did would make it better until I started rolling on a tennis ball. I still get some tightness in the hip area but the tennis ball gets in and hurts like hell but it keeps me going. I need to figure out what is causing the pain to begin with though. So far no luck this family doc or chiropractor. I'm trying to get into the sports med doc to pin point what the cause is. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() X2 on the tennis ball...or foam roller!! I too, had really bad, recurring iliac crest pain that only cropped up when I ramped up my running. Once the pain started, it hurt to run, walk, do stairs, bike, just about everything. I had a really bad flare-up 2 weeks before my OLY last year...I thought for sure, that I was DONE. By some miracle, my pain subsided just in time for my race and I managed to get through it just fine. Since then, it's been "on again/off again" with the hip pain...and the only thing that seems to help is rolling...either on a tennis ball or foam roller, along with a LOT of hip flexor and IT Band stretching. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks everyone! It helps knowing that I'm not the only one with these types of things two weeks before the race! Reminds me of last Oly where I had an evil bike crash two weeks before. Bike shop fixed up bike and doctor took care of my injuries. My injuries took longer to recover than the bike's. :-) I have an appointment first thing tomorrow morning before work with an excellent physical therapist that a good physical therapist friend of mine recommended. I was fortunate to get in. I guess I can tell you what happens! dbw27 |

New user ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Not trying to Hijack, but I am going through a similar injury. It came about from doing... well very little. I was really focusing on my swim, and boom, my hip randomly starts hurting and has been for 3 weeks. To clarify, is it safe for me to be rolling over the bursa? It hurts like *bleeping* hell when I hit that area. Is this the best thing for me to do? No one mentioned Cortisone shots? Does anyone do this for bursitis? |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm having extremely similar pain and I am racing Kona in 12 weeks - its sooo good to hear other people with similar problems! My PT was giving me heat and electro stim but that actually made it worse. However, my mom is a PT (living 12 hours away by plane though so she can't give the best advice) and she and her friends concurred that rolling on a tennis ball should make it feel a lot better - they suggested trying to find a spot in the butt area that is tender, and roll on that. I've found the tender area and actually have not been being proactive about it because I am getting conflicting suggestions from doctors but sounds like from other BTers that rolling probably won't hurt it! When you use a foam roller or tennis ball though, just to let you know, if your injury is decently bad it is going to hurt like a mother - but it will feel a whole lot better after you're finished! Good luck - I hope you get to race - and more importantly, I hope you recover quickly! ![]() |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have been having hip bursitis on and off for about 2 years now. It has been fine since February this year but of course hold and below now 3 weeks before my HIM it just started to hurt again this week. Made a PT appointment right away and he also used laser, heat and massage. It has been a bit better but I will probably find out during my long run on Sunday of how bad it really is. I might also just getting paranoid. I had 4 cortisone shots in total for the hip but they only relieved the pain for a while but the bursitis kept coming back. According to the doctor I should not run at all and it is overuse. Well thats not a good enough answer. In February I decided to stop all stretching (stretching made it worse for me) and in the beginning I only ran right after biking (did tons of bricks) as that seemed to make it a little better once the hip was warmed up. My hip also gets worse when I have a rest day or do very little for 1-2 days. One thing my PT recommended and I will try now is to take icebaths after my workouts, especially the runs. I HATE icebaths but I gave it a try this morning after a very very easy recovery run and so far the hip is fine Oh and I could not even imagine rolling over a tennisball! It sounds painful already and why would that help or better what would this do to make it better? I wish you a speedy recovery so you can do your race

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi everyone: Ack. I hope this gets better. NYC Tri is Sunday the 26th. Olympic. I have never had this before. It feels like my side is just sunken. Ice helps a lot. I went to the PT this morning and I felt it better. Although it hurt like wow! when he pressed on that spot. Anyway, my whole body just hurts and is tight right now. I just feel like bleah. I also just started my period so I am retaining water, which is probably not helping with the inflammation. Sigh. I am so sad. I have never felt this way before - just like total crapp. Like total crapp. Usually I have so much energy. Anyway, thanks for sharing your stories. It helps knowing that I am not alone. Yours truly, dbw27 |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Interesting. Let me add my story and two cents as there are some similarities. I've also been having problems with my hip area - actually about 2 inches in from my left side along the iliac crest. It started hurting in early June and was most noticeable during running. I ended up taking most of 3 weeks off due to traveling, but ended up going out running twice with a friend near the end of June. About 10 minutes into the second run, the spot that was troubling me just kind of spasmed - enough so that I let out a yell. I walked a little and then jogged the rest of the way back. When I tried to get back into my normal routine, I found that more aggressive swimming also hurt like hell, but that I usually felt a little looser after cycling. I started going to an accupuncturist about 2 weeks back. He has been using electric stimulation (stick in some needles and attach the power, cook for 15 minutes) along with some heat massage. Things have been getting better near the hip, but then I noticed some pain on my left side just at the bottom of the last rib, i.e., if I pressed in there, it hurt quite a bit. - When I asked him which muscle was causing the problem, he said the exterior obliques. They source on the rib cage and attach on the iliac crest - At the beginning of this week he applied three pieces of wide (2.5-3 inch) tape: one running straight up from the point where my hip pain was up over the area below the bottom rib; the other two pieces he just made an X across the center of the first piece of tape. Basic idea was to stop the affecting obliques from pulling on the iliac crest. If my description is not clear, let me know and I'll try again. - He told me I could try running or swimming with the taping. I actually went cycling instead and all was fine. The next day I tried taping myself the same way and went out for a run. It helped, but I ended up hurting and walking a couple times. - I went out again for a run yesterday, but had my wife do the taping. I could tell right away that there was a big difference between me doing the taping myself and having my wife do it. I went out and did 5k running with mostly no pain. This morning my sore points feel okay - no worse than yesterday and perhaps a little better. Next I need to see if the pool will let me in with taping. My wife doesn't think they will. - What do I think caused my problem? From the beginning, I was suspicious about pushing harder than usual with some ab related exercises in early June. Good luck sorting out your problems. I'm shooting for my first Oly tri on Aug 23 and the deadline for signup is approaching. I need to get my running and swimming back on track. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wow! Sounds like you have had some serious hip issues that maybe even put mine to shape. External obliques? Maybe that is it since, it was getting better until I started doing some twisting crunches. I am glad that your wife is there to tape you? August 23rd? So you have one month to get back on track? I hope you make it. I have the NYC Tri next Sunday and each day spells my doom. Although, now I am not quite so sure it is just 'injury.' Currently my entire body hurts. I feel like I have been hit by a MAC Truck. Run over - and backed up a few times. My neck is stiff and hurts. My hips hurt, my legs, my back, my shoulders, head hurts. Like I think only my fingers and arms don't hurt. Even my chest muscles hurt. My physical therapist yesterday asked me what kind of medication was taking. Well, I take Lamictal for clinical depression (also an anti-seizure medication). He asked me what the side effects were. I said, "um.. I don't know." He encouraged me to look it up. I did. Side effect: Severe muscle pain. In fact, it says that if I do get severe muscle pain to contact my health care provider immediately. It also causes flu like symptoms like body aches. Boy, do I have body aches! My whole body is one big ache. I think even my eyelids hurt. I had been thinking, "Wow. This hip injury is really causing a lot of compensatory problems by other muscles in my body." I went into a deep depression May and June, so my psychiatrist started increasing my Lamictal dosage starting July 1st. July 4th is when I had the hip muscle 'blow'. Ever since then as my dosage was slowly increased, the muscle aches all over my body have incredibly worsened. My psychiatrist said to stop increasing it if I found I couldn't 'tolerate' it. Well, I took that to mean to watch out for nausea and the usual GI symptoms. Alas, I never considered muscle pain. I put in a call to my psychiatrist. I HOPE that is the cause of the all over body ache. All over body ache/spasms/etc. = not fun. I wish you well in your impending tri. I hope I am not shut out of NYC on the 26th. :-) dbw27 |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wow. Glad your PT put you on to looking into the side effects. Good luck getting the meds and the pain sorted out. I hope that happens quickly so you're good for your upcoming tri. |

Member![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi everyone - I saw your post and had to put my two cents in. I am a beginner here - I was training for my first half marathon in August and came down with a strained right ankle and hip bursitis and IT band inflammation - all on my right side. I started physical therapy in the end of May (was told my hips were out of alignment and that is what caused my injuries), and my therapist turned me on to sprint tri's. I am hoping to attempt my first in October. NOW - back to my injury. I have been attending physical therapy now for about 6 weeks - they have been using the foam roller, the tennis ball - they have also had me incorporate what they call a "dynamic warmup" - some serious stretching moves - so far, nothing has helped. I now seemed to also have developed bursitis in my left hip due to overcompensation. My first therapist moved to another state, and they now have my training with a new one, who has me doing some strength exercises - hip extensions, leg presses, balance exercises, and squats on a bosu - the exercise ball cut in half. I have been following that routine for about 2 weeks now - 3 X a week. They took me off of running completely. I snuck in some running yesterday for the first time on concrete - my bursitis immediately acted up. But then later on I tried doing sprints on the beach - no problem. Seriously frustrated - I have been active for a long time and not used to not being able to doing things. I have been swimming, biking when I can (it's 112 degrees right now where I live). I really want to do this sprint tri in October. I have been thinking about either hiring a tri coach or a personal trainer and quitting physical therapy and seeing if that route helps me instead. If anybody has any suggestions I am all ears. Thanks - Elizabeth |

For me it worked to stop all the stretching...as we found out, I was just simply doing too much stretching and PT Hip exercises and the hip never got a break. It made things worse. You might want to try that for a week or two. And maybe just walk for now if it is still that bad! I also have not done any speed workouts since 6 months. Just steady paced running, sometimes slower, sometimes faster. I also got some orthopedics for my shoes and I think that made a huge difference too. ------------------- My hip has been fine since a week now again and I am looking positively toward the HIM. I have done lots of icing and have started icebaths after every run and it seems to work

Member![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks Joblin - I appreciate your input. My right hip is now starting to get a little bit better - to be honest with you - I haven't been really faithful about using the foam roller and tennis ball on it - or stretching - maybe that is why. Now my left gluteus minimus is really sore - so I am trying to work that out. I iced it last night - haven't tried an icebath yet - may have to try that. Good luck on your HIM. Thank you - Liz |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I also suffer from hip pain. It wakes me up at night with a persistent dull ache. I went to PT 2 years ago, and he gave me exercises that ease the pain. Basically, I am unbalanced and need to strengthen my glutes. When I do the exercises (clam shell open and close with resistance bands) and slowly lowering myself off a stair, it does help the problem. But then I slack off and the pain ramps up again. My sister has the same symtpoms in the same hip, and her doc has given her a steroid shot and she goes for chiro adjustments. |
