I think when many people look at IM they think it's all "work" and the reward is only at the finish line.  What they fail to realize how rewarding a long training s/b/r can be.  For me, there is a tremendous feeling of accomplishment associated with biking 100 miles or running 18 miles or swimming for 1.5 hrs non-stop.

So I guess part of what I love about IM is the training.  I love to go long!  Fact is, if I never raced again, I'd still s/b/r long distances.

This is one of the reasons why I sometimes have to hold myself back from launching on a rant when someone in their first post on BT asks if they would be able to do an Ironman in a few months as their first tri. Some people new to tri seem to think that we are all a bunch of type-A adrenaline junkies who love extreme sports. In reality I think that many of us are in it for the life style, and racing is just the icing on the cake.

Oh yeah - you're singing my song!

I look at short workouts to recover from the long ones and to keep up the overall volume. Maybe I need to reframe thgem to get get more value out of them, but I live for going long.

The sense of achievement at the end of a long session is great, but it's the exploring along the way that I love. Those short sessions get to be a bit routine because I forever seem to be covering the same terrain near home.

Come the long session and anything is possible. I think I discover a new corner of the countryside on just about every long ride or run. Gotta love that!

Dang Mike is BACK.  You're Posting everywhere.

That feeling when you hit the carpet at an IM is like a hit of crack.  Or so I hear.  That's why I want to make it through IMKY again, the finish.

Really?  I'm in it for the food--lots and lots of food.

When I told people we would be driving to Idaho this year for the race, they said "that's a long way to drive."  But as I kept track of my s/b/r miles, I s/b/r about that same distance.  Yea, it's a long drive.  It's even longer to s/b/r that far.

I thought that the reward would be the finish line - but it's definitely been the process of training.  I never used to like to train.  I liked to race and sort of half-heartedly trained.  I have thoroughly enjoyed the past 4 months.  The feeling of accomplishment after a long bike or a long run.  Swimming lots of open water.  It's been an incredible journey thus far and I hope that the race will be as positive an experience.

I couldn't agree more. I have loved the training so much that I can't imagine going back to shorter races. I raced an Oly for fun last weekend and it was such a letdown. I had always done longer rides before I got into IM training, but had never put it together with so many long runs and swims and I find it all so rewarding.

I fell today while running and my coach is making me shorten tomorrow to a semi rest day and the thought of it is making me crazy!!!

They were at the expo at IMKY 08, but I think they go to other IM races.  If not, there is always the option to buy online
