Subject: Conti Ultra Gator Skins vs Coni GP4000
Hello

I have been training with Conti Ultra Gator Skin folding tires this year. I have had only one flat when I picked up a piece of sharp thin metal which I think would have flatted any tire.

For my up coming race, I am wondering if I should stick with my Gator Skins or get some GP4000's?

There is 25 grams difference in the weight of the tire which to mean doesn't seem like a lot, but is there a noticeable difference in the rolling resistance? Is the GP4000 as durable at the Gator?

I am a MOP rider so I guess what I am trying to figure out is, is it worth it to buy GP4000's or should I just race with the Gators?

Anyone else race with Gators?

Thanks

I switched to Gators after a rash of flats... have not had a flat in 1,300 miles on the Gators. At my level of performance a few grams are meaningless, so I stick with the Gators.

GP4000s have better rolling resistance in addition to the lighter weight. Pretty good flat resistance too, from what i understand.

As with any "is it worth it" question, the decision is up to you.

The GP 4 Seasons are a good tire too. I have all three on different bikes. I'm no longer going to ride the Gatorskins, I find them greasy in very cold conditions. The GP 4 Seasons ride a lot nicer, have grip in the cold and I have not flatted on them. I have GP4000S too. They feel a little better than the GP 4 Season, can not say which is more flat resistant as I'm not sure I've flatted either since riding them. Plus my GP 4 Seasons are 25mm and ride plush, my GP4000S are 23 and ride a little firmer.

I've had a recent rash of flats on my Gatorskin Tubulars that I ride on my road bike. Now have a set of Vittoria Pave Evo CG Tubluars coming from probikekit.com to replace the Conti's. I got a nasty tear on Friday replaced the tire and then today ripped apart the sidewall while going slow and on clean road. Went back and saw nothing that would have done the damage. Two tubbies down the drain over 3 days, not cool. Good for the economy though.

I use both of those tires and race with the GP4000. I generally try to do training rides with the Gator Skins because of all the glass people throw on the bike paths around here.

If you're already using Gator Skins and are comfortable with them, use them in the race. After the race pick up a pair of GP4000 and see if you can tell the difference. I'll bet you can but either way they're both great tires.

Most likely will you be able to tell the difference. The Gator Skins are great tires in their own right, but they are not easy rolling tires. Get the GP4000S though, which is in my opinion the best clinchers on the market (and made me sell of the tubulars I used to ride); the S is very important as they are completely different from the normal GP4000.

Well I decided that I was going to buy GPS4000s tire for the race. Installed them and did a 50 min Z1 ride today.

I don't know if it's the taper or the tires or a little of both, but I had the fastest average Z1 ride I have ever had.

I am looking forward to great race on Sunday! Smile

Really? How so? I have the 4000S...bought them at Probikekit, but was under the impression (at least according to the PBK website and their descriptions of both the "S" and regular BLACK 4000) that the ONLY difference was the silver lettering and all black color of the "S". Based on the description of the 2 tires, they both have the black chili compound. Now, if you're referring to the "colored" 4000 tires, then yes...I do believe that those do NOT have the black chili compound and are indeed slightly different. But as far as I know...the black 4000 & 4000S are essentially the same tire with different lettering.
