I think when they turn gold they are popular with lots of comments?

Look at the gold ones, they are normally 2+ pages long.

Not 100% sure on this however.

It means the user is a paid member of this site.

Right click the image and choose "save as" (no need to actually save it) - the image names will tell you everything you want to know...

I think we're all talking about something different!  The stars apparently refer to post count.  The silver and gold apparently are for popular threads.  I thought the OP was talking about the little medal icons, which indicate a paid subscriber...  I think what we have here is a failure to communicate...  

My interpretation:

Silver circle with exclamation point - thread with responses < 6 hrs old (this is a guess) and <21 responses

Gold cirlce with exclamation point - thread with responses < 6 hrs old (this is a guess) and =>21 responses

Silver circle with "MB" - thread with responses >6 hrs old (this is a guess) and <21 responses

Gold circle with "MB" - thread with responses > 6 hrs old (this is a guess) and =>21 responses
