Subject: Alternative Roswell Route

After Karen's crash I emailed Eric Broadwell who is MR. BIKE ROSWELL. Was the president for years and a huge advocate for biking in Roswell - worked hard for the bike boxes and helped to get them implemented.

I let Eric know where Karen wrecked and asked him when Grimes Bridge would open again and asked him if the Thursday night ride uses the same route we take. His response:

The Marietta option is actually the best. There is a safer way to take that road. Rather than crossing three lanes of traffic at 40+ miles an hour you can stay in your own lane on the right and come to a stop at the bottom and cross to go with traffic across 120. That turn onto Coleman has always scared me even in a car. I use to live in the first neighborhood on the left on Coleman so I understand.

The Marietta Hwy (120) is actually much safer when staying in the right lane.

Yes this is the route Thursday night takes. But we (most of us) don’t stay right and stop, we ride down the left lane at 40+ mph.

Grimes Bridge will re-open in the late fall. You can get a more accurate answer by contacting the Transportation Director for Roswell Steve Acenbrak. Steve also put in the bike box so don’t beat him up too bad if you don’t like something.

As much as I like the challenge of the uphills on Coleman I plan to opt in the future to take Marietta Highway, especially in the rain.

I rode with the Riverside Park group tonight and they turned one light before Coleman. It was left on Mimosa, then right on Hwy 120. I felt safer turning there before the big downhill, unfortunitely it was about 1.5 mile shorter and cuts that good uphill out. total distance was 20.7 where we usually get 22.5 from RAP. of course part of that was also probably less parking lot to ride thru from Riverside.

I'm going to keep takimg Coleman. I'll just be more carefull when I'm aproaching that turn. I can manage myself and make the Coleman Rd route safe, but I can't manage the cars on 120 going 65 mph.

Jamie Corn and I frequently turn right onto North Coleman from Woodstock (North Coleman is the road they just paved) and then take a left onto Pine Grove/Magnolia so that we come up to the "bad" light from the other (downhill) side to take a right onto Coleman. There is no light to turn left onto Pine Grove/Magnolia, but if you are patient there are big enough gaps to cross safely. I think that is a decrease in mileage also but we could always add on the loop through Waverly Hall and/or through Wildwood Springs to add it back.

There is also another way to go through Lake Charles subdivision to get to North Coleman but I don't know if it is marked.

Justin will have to make the call for the Thursday group, but FWIW when I'm solo I just go the "usual" way.

You can always go right out of the park, left on Jones and left on lake charles (there is a light) then left on Pine grove/Shallowford then right on Coleman.

Or you can go left off of Lake Charles at Oak something St and wind through Land of Lakes to North Coleman and then go right (route points you left).

And like Steph mentioned you can also go through I think it is called Still Shade (neighborhood across from elementary school next the park). It is marked but for the reverse at the start of the neighborhood. Then at Oak(something) St it picks up the mile high markers and will wind you through Land of Lake and take you to NorthColeman. Route will point you left but just go right and then left on Pine/(Shallowford) and right on Coleman.

This is just if you want to add more mileage. I have often taken the 120 option and not had a problem. However I have never taken it in the late afternoons so with the extra traffic it might be a little more dicey.
