I'm in my last year of college/university. I'm 20 years old.

I'm undecided if next summer I should get into multisport or triathlon. I want to do multisport short term, meaning I just want to do one summer of it to experience certain races. I will do multisport for 1-2 years max.

Triathlon is my more major long term goals. I'm currently racing olympic distance but in the next 3-5 years want to move up to 1/2 and full IM races. If I don't do multisport races now, I would most likely do them in about 10+ years if I'm still involved in endurance sports.

I don't own a decent mountain bike or a kayak.

Should I do multisport for a year after college? Or go straight into triathlon? (I'm not competitive in my age group, I just race to complete races and for fitness and fun)

Also, if I start training for multisport, I will have to spend a bit on a new bike and kayak. I will also cut down on the swimming to fit in the kayaking, will it be a big loss in swimming fitness if I only swim 2x per week?

I always thought "multisport" was a generic term for any sport that involves multiple events--tri, du, etc.

Am I missing something? I mean, obviously I am, but I figured I'd ask.

Multisport is a mix of

Kayak
Run
Road Cycle
Mountain Bike

There is generally no swimming, if you want off road triathlon, that is xterra.

Also, are you able to vote on this poll, or did I screw something up?

Well, you say you want to do it only for fitness and fun.  All of what you describe provides fitness.  So what's the most fun?  Do that.

hm.  i thought that was adventure racing.  i've always referred to it as such, and considered multi-sport to be any combo of multiple sports.  guess i'm a little literal.

I'd do both.  I love to kayak (but didn't know they had triathon style kayak/bike/etc races) and I love to mountain bike, road bike, bmx bike, freestyle bike, roller blade, or anything I find fun (and dangerous).

But I was talking to a buddy of mine the other day about how it would be fun to have a kayak race down a river (nothing too hard) for about a mile or two, then hop on a road bike and ride for say 10miles and then finish with a roller blade 5k-10k.  I'd be more interested in how much money would get dumped into it.  $3000 for a yak, $5000 for a bike, and then $1000 for some speed skates.  All CF of course.

You can pick up a decent kayak for $200 from Dick's right now (providing you don't plan to hit some major rapids).

Multisport is widely used to describe events with mutltiple disciplines. 'Fueling the Multisport Lifestyle' is the slogan on the front of USAT's magazine. Many Tri Shops have Multisport in their business names as well as clubs. Anyway, just had to throw that in there!

Well, doesn't particularly matter, basically... what do you recommend I do? I'm leaning more towards doing the off road and kayak type stuff, but getting the safety course, buying a mountain bike, a kayak and the travel and transport involved is getting particularly costly.

Do most people buy their kayaks or hire them for a season or something?

Off road/mountain bike/kayak

OR

Triathlon?

Multisport is any event combining 2 or more events.  The multisport you're referring to is just one type.  As far as what to do, nobody here can tell you that.  It depends on what you want to do, there is no wrong.  Most people I know who kayak though own their kayaks.
