Subject: wave start mistake
I got my registration stuff for race tomorrow, and I was put in the Novice swim start by mistake....something must have happened during registration on active, as I was working check in and a guy I know who is first out of the water in pretty much every race was put in the novice wave as well.  (I didnt check him in, just noticed him on the sign in sheet, so i couldnt ask him)

they wouldn't switch me and said to check tomorrow, but it was kinda like, "its not a big deal, leave it alone"

the more I think about it, the more I see it as an advantage...I will able to draft off 3 swim waves and legally draft off 100-200 bikers....

than I thought more, what will people think when they see someone in the "novice" wave, place well? (should I place well)....

I guess I should just make an attempt to have the RD put me in the right wave, have it be his call...that way its out of my hands......

thoughts?

I would try to get yourself put in the proper wave.

As long as people in the novice wave get scored in their regular age groups, I wouldn't sweat it.

If there are separate awards for the novice group and you wind up placing, you need to make sure you don't take a podium spot away from a real novice.  I'd think that the RD and timing company could fix that.

I think you're going to be mixed in with some inexperienced, slow bikers. That would drive me nuts, so I would insist to be put in the right category. Why would you be able to legally draft off bikers in that race...?

I think he has in mind the fact (let's assume it is a fact for the sake of conversation Wink ) that he will be passing loads of people, so entering (and exiting) lots of drafting zones.

But yeah, I agree with you that the hassle of passing all of those people isn't worth it.  Believe me, I've been there (I'm a slow swimmer but a faster than average biker).  I have generally passed loads of people on the bike in my races and I think that the issues of dealing with people who are inexperienced is more trouble than the small drafting advantage you get while passing them.

I don't know that "novice" necessarily means "slow."  Or even necessarily "inexperienced."  Plenty of people come into triathlon with extensive single-sport experience and lots of athletic ability, but might still sign up in the novice wave.

But if we assume it does, shouldn't OP expect to be at the front of the wave coming out of the water and through T1, and therefore not have to deal with the "slow, inexperienced" bikers in his wave?  Seems like the only real disadvantage would be having to do T1 in an area that was still packed with racked bikes...

But he'd still have to deal with the slow swimmers, bikers & runners in the age group waves ahead, just like we all have to do in every race unless we're in the pro/elite waves.  I don't see where starting in a novice wave really makes a difference.

But whatever you do, make sure you start in the wave the computer says you're in.  Don't start with your age group unless they've officially moved you there.  Otherwise your time is likely to be F'd up, since the start is usually based on the clock time that the horn goes off and not on your chip.

Around here if you are in novice wave you compete in that instead of your AG.

I would talk with RD about it tomorrow and try to get moved.
