I put the bike down and have a good dose of road rash.  How long should I stay out of the pool as a good Rule of Thumb?  I scraped shoulder, arm, hip, calf and ankle.  Nothing too deep and I have been still on my plan except for the swim.  cb

A couple days. I did it a couple weeks ago when it happened to me and was fine maybe wait a little longer for ows because of bacteria...

Agreed.  Depends on the degree of the road rash and the rate of recovery but I was pleasantly surprised with how quickly I could get back in the pool.  I thought it would be a week at least but was back after 3 days off.

I waited 2 days on mine. I did a shower test with direct water flow on it to see if I could handle the sting.

If you are OWS with a wetsuit, you may want to be cautious, as the material rubbed my scabs off. Ouch.

Good luck!

I stayed away for about two weeks, but that was mostly out of deference to the other people who use the pool and might've been freaked. Mine was fairly extensive, and looked pretty grisly for quite a while.

It was also easy for me to stay away because I suffered a separted shoulder in the crash as well. I knew I could get in and do sculling and one-arm stuff, however, so I think about 75% of my staying away was out of respect for the other pool-users - with the other 25% being avoidance of severe tedium!

Thanks for the responses.  It has been a week and most of it has healed enough to get in the water but not all.  Some of it may have been deeper than I first thought.  Showers still suck and I am still leaking a bit.  I am taking the time to push the bike some!  Maybe another week.

You sound like me. I'm dealing with this now and the separated shoulder is keeping me away more than the road rash. Having said that, if I didn't have a separated shoulder I would still stay out as long as your wounds are oozing. Its been 9 days and some of mine are still oozing (they were pretty deep...hit the road at 26mph according to Garmin) but am planning on hitting the pool as soon as they are closed up.
