Subject: Shimano SH-R214 Road Shoe for a TREK 1200 Bike

Hi,

I just bought my first road bike, TREK 1200 that’s about a 1996 model. I don’t know much about road biking at this point so I am wondering what type of shoes to get? The seller said that the peddles have not been changed out and are manufacturer originals. I am looking at a Shimano SH-R214 Road Shoe on ebay but I want to know if they will actually be able to clip into the peddles? If they are not compatible does anybody have any suggestions for a model of shoe that will fit this bike?

compatible cleats would be the only issue I am aware of.

Worst case scenario, you replace the pedals and buy new cleats... under / around $100

What kind of pedals are they?

That's got the three primary types of pedals, platform, mountain bike and road bike. Do your pedals look like any of those?

Basically your shoes should take either two or three hole cleats.

For triathlons I would not suggest any shoe with three straps, especially one with a ratcheting mechanism.

Likely, the bike originals will be platforms with toe straps.  Sneakers would be the only thing required in this case.  If you choose to go clipless, with those shoes you are looking at you will need a pedal/cleat that is three hole compatible (SPD-SL, Look, Speedplay, etc).
