Pre-race routine:

My husband and I got to Orlando on Friday night. We stayed at the Coronado Springs which was a nice hotel and very convenient. The registration process was pretty easy on Saturday. I met up with Sue to get the bike I was borrowing and the process of getting it to the transition was pretty easy. On Saturday night we met up with the girls for dinner. I was in bed by 9:30 and actually slept pretty good. We set the alarm for 4:15. I figured that getting to the transition by 4:45 would give me plenty of time. I thought that I allowed myself plenty of time in the morning, but it seemed like I was really rushing around the transition area in the morning. I felt like I barely got my stuff down before they were calling for the first wave to go down to the beach. As a matter of fact, I started leaving the transition and realized I still had my shoes and socks on.
Event warmup:

Rushing through the transition area!
Swim
  • 10m 11s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 33s / 100 yards
Comments:

The water was really warm. Standing on the beach, there were a lot of panicked faces. Although this was my first road tri, I have done one off-road so I have done an open water start before and knew what to expect. I started towared the back of the wave, and had a hard time moving up. I got kicked two or three times, but was happy with the end result of the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Practice in open water. Living up north, all of my swim practice has been in a pool. I had to keep reminding myself to look where I was going. Because this was not really a competitive race, I should have started closer to the front of the wave. I am a strong swimmer and could have posted a better time if I avoided some traffic
Transition 1
  • 02m 40s
Comments:

Pretty smooth transition. I had a water bottle to wash off my feet and after a quick dry I got my socks and shoes on, put on my helmet and was gone. The only problem I had was that my glasses had so much condensation on them that I could not see a thing.
What would you do differently?:

More water for washing the sand from my feet. Check my glasses before heading out.
Bike
  • 35m 40s
  • 10 miles
  • 16.82 mile/hr
Comments:

Nice flat course. I borrowed a bike from Sue (thanks again) and it worked out great. The bike is definately my strongest area so I tried hard to make up some positions. I probably passed 100 or so bikers. The no-passing zone was a little frustrating but it did give me the opportunity to hydrate. It was an out-and-back 10 mile course. There were bikes on the course ranging from top of the line tri bikes (awesome rides Wendy and Sue!)to a woman on a pink cruiser. I swear I saw a bike with a basket on the front!
What would you do differently?:

Get comfortable with aero bars
Transition 2
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

The dismount point was about 100 yards before the transition area. It was a single lane and there was no sense of urgency on the parts of the racers in front of me. I wanted to run into transition but was forced to walk.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more water before leaving for the run
Run
  • 21m 55s
  • 2 miles
  • 10m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

The simple fact is, I am a lousy runner!
What would you do differently?:

Run more and keep repeating to myself... "I love to run"..."I love to run"..."I love to run"..."I love to run"..."I love to run"..."I love to run"...
Post race
Warm down:

Looking for my husband and the other BT girls!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Starting in the back of the swim wave, the no-passing zone but mostly the fact that I run like my Grandma!

Event comments:

Since this was my first road tri, I don't have a lot to compare it to. The registration process seemed ok, except for the fact that people were supposed to register based on their last name, but in reality you could register at any time. The expo was fine. It would have been better to have the course talks in a different room than the expo. It was hard to hear what the speakers were saying because there was a lot of chatter coming from the expo. Sally Edwards is a great speaker and was very inspiring. I liked the venue, but it did feel rushed which it was because we had to be off the course before the parks opened. There is an Olympic distance race there in September and my new goal is to be there!

Congratulations and glad you had a great time and a safe trip home.  thank your husband for cheering for me.  I really did hear him at the bike in/out area.  If my hip gets better I'll see ya at Disney for the Oly.  Never did ask you but what kind of bike do you have at home?  take care -SMO
