Subject: MOO 2011 last year in Madison - Rumor

Heard last night that 2011 might be the last year for an IM-branded race in Madison.

I was discussing this year's race at church last night with a 3-time finisher who indicated that the contract WTC picked up from NAS for the MOO race ends with the 2011 installment. He indicated that this information was gathered first-hand from the former head of NAS. He further opined that while most of the cities/towns affected by the race are supportive, Cross Plains is not (no hotels so no big benefits, only the inconvenience of race day and training traffic).

With this one source, I have a link to a press release issued by the Wisconsin Sports Development Corporation in July of '07 indicating that WSDC entered into an agreement with Ironman North America to extend the hosting of the race through 2011, but that's it for substantiation/clarification. I am unclear of the busines relationships/current status of WSDC, Ironman North America, North American Sports, and WTC. Anyone else have corroborating or refuting knowledge/clarification and can share same? I'm more than passively interested as I am planning to participate in 2011 for my second go-round.

The rumors crop up for every race when the contract is about to expire...LP was the latest.

Considering that the area is estimated to take in $2.3 million+ dollars during the four days that typically make up IM weekend, they'd be stupid to let the race go.

Maybe the city of Madison needs to throw a little money to Cross Plains to keep them happy so they can continue the race.  I am planning on racing in 2011 as well.

I know of a little bike/coffee shop in CP that would have a -fit if Cross Plains puts their bid in for "no more race". Besides, they can just change the course if Mt. Horeb, Cross Plains, etc. start having a problem with it.

It would seem that with the economic times, Madison would do everything they can and the surrounding communities as well if it brings in as much money as is posted. 

It is kind of the same thing around here  in Iowa with Ragbraii and all of the small towns that receive such a boost when that weeks comes around every year......party or no party, it still brings alot of cash to the smaller communities, as well as, the state of Iowa!!!

Looking at the popularity of this race and the fact that 2010 sold out on the same day registration opened in a DOWN economy... I'd be very surprised if Madison let this race go.

Also - just because the contract ends in 2011 doesn't mean the race will. It just means the terms of the contract are up for negotiation.
