Subject: Am I aero crazy? Should I spend the cash on a Zipp Disc????
Hi all...I am doing my first Ironman (IM Florida) in November. I have a history with cycling - used to ride USCF races in high school and college and am averaging about 18mph for a 5 hour ride at the moment. I have a set of older 2003 non-dimpled Zipp 404's that I've used in 1/2 IM's and Olympic distance races. I have been seriously considering either a Zipp 900 or, ideally, due to it being faster and allegedly more comfortable over the long haul, a Zipp Sub 9 disc. I ride a Felt DA with Campy Record and Oval Concepts A901 bars. I know a disc vs. a 404 rear should make me faster, and I've seen the data on Zipp's site, but still can't decide whether or not to spend the money. I plan on riding some time trial next year, and doing at least 2 Olympic and 1 1/2 IM next year, so I would get some use out of it beyond the IM FLA. I CAN spend the money, but money is tight and there are a lot of other things I could spend $1200-$1550 on (cbike has a 25% off sale until sunday night). Should I just stick with my 404's considering I am a middle of pack age grouper or do you think it's worth the plunge?

You could always rent a disc for race day.

www.racedaywheels.com

Thanks for the suggestion... I already have my order in for a Sub 9 / 808 combo at raceday wheels, but that's like $205 with insurance, and I'm not gonna do that again for the 4-6 Tris and TT's I plan on doing next year (and I can mentally subtract the $205 from the cost of a new disc since I won't be using race day wheels)...

I would go with a disc cover for your 404 and get all of the benefits of a disc for around $100.

My suggestion would be to spend that money on a Cycleops Powerbeam Pro or some other trainer with a power meter and work on your speed. Or spend that money and work with a coach. You will get a heck of a lot more for your money doing the before mentioned things than going from a 404 rear to a 900 or sub 9. Or buy a wheelcover like another person said and spend the rest of the money on a coach or trainer with a power meter.
