Mike,A change made on or around 1/27 caused the RSS feeds from pages where people list their page limited BT members as no longer viewable in syndication client. A cookie is needed which is not available in the client. Viewing the feed page with a browser while logged into BT shows the feed correctly, not longed in gives the login needed dialog. Was this an intended or unintended change?

This was intentional. It's to get the RSS feed security in line with the regular site security policies.

Thanks, is there going to be a consideration where people could modify or turn off RSS?  The feeds were nice to keep track of updates. Do you know of a way to use cookies in a syndication client? At this point with the new fix, the RSS is mostly useless

If someone sets their security to have their log only be viewable by people on their Friends list, then it's reasonable to require that the viewer be logged into BT via their browser to view that information. Given that, we're going to keep it the way it isWe're going to keep it the way it is.

The RSS feed is useful for anyone with their security set to allow others unrestricted viewing of their log.

We'll disable the RSS icon if a member's security settings will prevent viewing their training info via RSS.

I agree with that, but the change that was put into place disables all RSS unless the user specifically sets there page to allow guest of the site to view the page. So for example my page is viewable to all members of BT, not just friends.. and most of my friends are set the same way, but this security setting prevents RSS from reading the page now, since it requires a BT login.

The only case where RSS is now usable is if "Allow guests of the site to view any logs you have made public?" is checked

We consider that to be reasonable. Our security model requires that a member specifically make their data available to people who aren't logged in as members. This change just applies that same requirement to RSS feeds.

You have to keep in mind that RSS wasn't designed for secure information, it's for open content.  The RSS spec contains no provisions at all for restricted feeds.

All RSS readers are by definition "guests of the site". What you're looking for is an aggregator that will allow you to maintain a login to a site.

hey marmadaddy.

i understand your position, but wanted to echo scott's comments. the rss feed was the best way to keep up with multiple logs. with the current setting, friends or not, the rss feed shows nothing. it took away one of the best features of bt.

what about an enable/disable rss checkbox? that would let users decide if they wanted it enabled without having to enable full guest access.

One workaround if you want to keep up with your friends blogs to see who's updated recently, you can use the BT Blogger My Friends link.

I understand your frustration that this has changed, but these people have defined their security settings to not allow viewing of their data outside of BT. An RSS reader is outside of BT and there's no functional difference between viewing log  data with an RSS reader and a browser. One is not more private than another.

The security settings are for the owner of the blog, not the person who wants to view it.  If someone wants their data viewed outside of the site whether using a browser or an RSS reader, they can enable it.

i understand your point, but you have to admit that calling guest blocking a security feature is a bit much. what's the difference between someone unregistered and someone who can register in :20 seconds?

i do like the bt logger feature! thanks for the tip. if it had a read/unread feature and actually posted the workouts on there, it would be even better than rss! any chance that could happen?
