Subject: Mark your calendars!

Due to last years smashing success of the 56/112 mile ride at Alum Creek State Park Beach I’ve decided to organize another event for this year. This time, instead of a straight ride, we’ll do a training triathlon.

We’ll meet up at Alum Creek beach at 7:30am on Saturday, May 15th. The event will start at 8am, sharp. We’ll swim one length of the beach, starting at the north end and exiting at the south end. T1/T2 will be in the grass at the south end of the beach.

Next we’ll jump on our bikes and ride one loop (about 12.4 miles) or two loops (about 25 miles) of the Fat Rabbit bike course. You may choose to bike one or two loops, it’s up to you.

Next we’ll head out for a run. I’ll come up with a 3.1 mile course and a 6.2 mile course. I don’t want to use the existing Fat Rabbit course for this race as it has you running on busy Lewis Center Rd. I’ve been using Google Earth to come up with a few ideas for routes. You may run either the 5k or 10k course, it’s up to you.

After the event you can all swing by my house for a post race barbeque. I live exactly 12.5 miles from the beach. I’ll supply the burgers, dogs and buns but if you all could bring a side dish and whatever you’d like to drink that’d be great. Showers will be available for those that live out of town and need to use them.

Never asked questions (but questions you may have)

Q: How much will this cost me in entry fees?

A: Nothing. This is a fun event organized by me but without any sanctioning by any organization.

Q: I’m pretty fast, what is the first place prize?

A: Uh, nothing. Didn’t I mention this is a free event? If you’re a cute girl I’ll be happy give you a hug. In fact, I’ll give any cute girls a hug weather you take first place or not.

Q: Can I get hand ups on the bike?

A: No. There will be no hand ups at the event. Also, if you think there will be aid stations on the run you’re going to be disappointed. Carry what you think you will need with you on the B/R.

Q: Will the police be out on the bike course directing traffic?

A: No. Again, this is a free event; it’s not put on by a race company. You must obey all traffic laws while on the bike. This means stopping at all stop signs/traffic lights. This is a fun event. This is a training event. Be careful on the bike. This event is not worth getting T-boned over.

Q: I don’t want to swim. Can I still come out and bike and run with the rest of you?

A: Sure. Do whatever portion of the event you’d like. Do any distance you’d like. It makes no difference to me.

Q: I want to do this event as a relay team with some drinking buddies. Is that ok?

A: See above answer. Just don’t expect a first place hug from me when you’re done (unless you’re all cute girls).

Q: Where do I pick up my race packet and finishers shirt?

A: For the last time-THIS IS A NON SANCTIONED, FREE EVENT. No race packet, no shirt, no timing chip, no support. Get it?

Q: I’m a cute girl. I’d like to just come by and cheer you all on. Is this ok?

A: Sure. I’ll even give you a hug if you want one.

Q: I don’t want to do the event, but I would like to volunteer that morning to watch gear and keep (unofficial) time for you all. Can I help?

A: Sure! That’d be great. Just let me know here on this thread. I do want someone at the beach to watch all our stuff while were swimming and running. I’m looking for volunteers. If no one is able to do it and I can’t find anyone, then I’ll stay at the beach while you all race.

Q: I don’t want to do the event but I would like to meet up with my BT friends afterwards at the barbeque. Can I still come to just that?

A: You bet. Racers, bring your families. We’ve got two kids and a big backyard. So there will be other little ones for them to run around with.

Q: I’ll be there. What’s your address?

A: As you let me know you’re coming I’ll PM you with my address and phone number. I don’t want my business all out on the net like that.

Q: I’m a cute guy. Can I have a hug?

A: Not from me.

Q: Please?

A: No.

I'd like to do this with.

I can take a shift watching gear if there aren't any non participants.

I'd like to do all three legs but I could skip the bike or run to watch gear.

Or the transition could be in your own car.  Just carry your key.

I would definitely NOT race.  I would be looking to try out my wet suit then ride and run with folks.  I may or may not actually swim the distance because I want to just figure out how to use and remove the wetsuit.  Ride pace? 17-21 mph?  Run 8-9 min miles?

I've been doing a lot of research and reading reviews...  in your opinion, what's good for a beginner, yet still comfy and cheap???  I'll accept ANY advice in this department!

(Had some unexpected expenses when I tuned up my ol' bike and then my heart rate monitor died....  the funds are running dry rather quickly...

one that fits you, and fits your wallet.

the fit of the suit is the number one thing to worry about. a perfectly fitting lower prices suit will be faster than any top of the line one that is even a bit off.

if you are interested in an xterra suit let me know, and call them about sizing, they are VERY helpful and will get ou in the right one

Cool! So we've got Brue, maybe Tammy, maybe Amy, Sungirl and Kate so far. Let me know guys and gals if you are planning to come by my house afterwards and eat. Also, who you will be bringing with you. I want to make sure I have enough food. Also Kate, make sure you thank David for volunteering to watch our stuff. I might have a few other small jobs for him that morning if he is willing to help out in other ways. I might have him take a few pics as well.

I've been looking at the run course. I think we'll do 2x 1.55 mile out and backs for the  10k run (one out and back for the 5k). Trying to figure out a one loop run on the back roads of the park was getting too confusing. The space was there but it required doubling back several times.

To you new folks: this would be a fantastic event for your first unofficial tri or du. We'll have some vets there and you can ask us all the questions you want. Don't be afraid to show up because you think you'll be made fun of or dropped. I can't speak for anyone else but I'm not in great shape this year and won't be going fast. We'll be happy to show you how to set up your transition area and give you some other pointers. If you've been lurking for a while, or if you are unsure of how to get started in this crazy sport now is the time to introduce yourself online and meet us out at Alum.

I spend most of my sat and sundays @ Alum creek- it's a nice 20mi ride for me to the beach from my house.  Almost always there is a group swimming there in the mornings.

David- you had to ask if we were eating?  Come on man!  I'll be bringing something, just don't know what yet.  pasta salad is my first guess .

I ain't swimming. No way, no day. Not in May. That water will be freaking cold.

Not to mention I am seriously undertrained.

I'll do the run and the bike at least... and I'll come for the cookout.... Are you sure I can't get a hug?

I checked a real time fishing website and it said the water temp is 62-63 now. Hopefully it will warm up a bit before then. I think the water temp at Deer Creek last September was 68 or so, and I didn't use one then either.

All,

I forgot to mention that I can watch gear during the run if needed. I am trying to take it easy on my shins for now. I will run a bit if it is covered, but am fine with watching if I am needed.

What is 15 days earlier???  How cold can it be?
