Looking for any information on this course from people who have done it in previous years. I'm still recuperating from a bike crash on a practice ride for the Kansas 70.3. Doctor has pretty much benched me for the better part of May so it looks like an October Half Iron would be a good timetable for me. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Depends on the final course they choose(there's 2 options, depending on the weather this summer) but I'd say hill work on your runs is a good bet. If they include Quadzilla again, definitely do some hill work. As for the bike, the hills are mostly 'rolling hills' so you might want to add in some hills in your long rides but none of them are terribly difficult.

Just signed up! Looking forward to my first HIM! Like Jeff I am looking to learn from those that have done the course or have local knowledge.

Ok - what's Quadzilla? Look forward to your thoughts on the course once it settled. Thanks

Quadzilla is a hill that you climb up twice(once per loop) and it's a beast.  I couldn't tell you the elevation on it, but it will kick you in the @ss.  If I had to guess, I'd say at least half the people will walk up it once if not both times.  Whether Quadzilla's in the course or not - and my understanding is that weather permitting it will be - the run has enough rolling hills that you would be well-served to do some hill training on your runs.

x2.  I've done this race 3x and don't think I've ever run up that hill.  I've done other races at the same location (Couples Tri) and didn't run up it then.  It is a beast of a hill and I like to run hills.

Train on hills (for both the bike and run) and you'll be fine.

Anyone have an idea of the "fullness" of this race?  Did it last year and was able to sign up waaay ahead of time but circumstances aren't allowing for that this year.  Keith, are you out there?

I am training, but haven't signed up.  I want to see how my biking goes before I commit.

Any advice on bike shipping? I have not shipped my bike before. I contacted the official race bike shop and they suggested just having a local bike shop pack it in a cardboard box that new bikes come in - sounds a bit sketchy - don't want it to arrive and not have a working bike. Any advice?

BTW: The bike shop listed on the race site does not have the Austin HIM listed on their event site. I contacted them via email - but no reply.

Jack & Adam's is a quality shop, you shouldn't worry about them mishandling/misplacing your bike.  I'd suggest calling them if you don't hear back via email(I've had good response times from them in the past via email, FWIW).

Depending what airline you take, the baggage check fee may be cheaper than shipping (it also may be a LOT more).  Southwest is one of the best - $50.  I think one airline does a special deal if you're traveling for an official Ironman race too (Delta maybe, but not sure).

Either way the shop packed box is fine, and I've shipped like this a few times.  If you want, there are hard shell bike boxes too (performance.com has some good/cheaper ones).  I got mine there on sale and with a coupon there for a little over $150.

x2 re: Jack and Adam's.  They are a friendly bunch and do provide quality service.  They will take good care of your ride.  I would suggest you call ahead and schedule something with them as they will get quite busy around race time.

Thanks for the bike shipping info - I also heard about air caddy - seems like a bit better than the regular cardboard box.
http://www.aircaddy.com/ I may give it a try

I'm subbing to this thread because it looks like this will be my best shot at a HIM this year, given that I haven't trained consistently since 2008.

I have done the race twice. Even if quadzilla is not on the run course, you better practice the hills on your long runs. There is basically no shade, on the run, so it can get very hot. If you are used to nice smooth asphalt roads to ride on, you may not like the bike ride. The roads are mainly chipseal. The run through the events center is one of the best experiences I have had in triathlon. You run through it from T2 and then you finish there also. No body organizes a race better than Keith Jordan. I would not hesitate, for a second, to do it again.

Registered tonight!!!  Woohooooo!!!

  Laughing

The family accountant (wife) has tallied the budget numbers for June so I pulled the trigger tonight.  Now I've got a little time to ease her into the $300 fee for this race...at least until she messes with the budget again in early August.

Looking forward to doing Longhorn again this year!

I pulled the trigger.  Did a sprint on Saturday and told myself if I could maintain better than 14.5 mph, about .5 mph faster than last year, I would sign up.  Well my bike computer showed 16.2.  Now I just have to keep working on those hilly rides.

I was looking for a second 70.3 this year (did Hawaii 70.3 in June) so I'm in.  The course map is posted - but I'm not sure if "Quadzilla" is in the course or not.

The run course currently posted is the same as the 2009 course. The course has a lot of small rollers, but does not include Quadzilla.

Yay for no Quadzilla!

Seriously though, thanks for sharing your knowledge of the course. It's my first 70.3, anything else unusual a newbie should know about the course?
