I will find out for sure at the doctor's tomorrow. I am pretty freaked out about having to lay off training. |

Any one got helpfull hints on the course. I assume you mean warmup for IM Boise 70.3 on June 11? Coeur D'Alene is on 6/26/2011...Hints for IM Cali? Train hills for the bike, as well as rollers, because the back side of the course is full of em'. Run is pretty much pancake flat and sighting your way back in on the swim can be a bit of a pain when the sun comes up. First class race with a stacked field of talent - bring your "A" game if you're looking to finish high here. See you there....-John |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() this looks like a good first HIM for me. I'm still getting over some injuries, so I'd like to put off signing up until after November if possible. When does this race fill up? I'm not worried about the distance- I can do it tomorrow. But I want to execute a good training plan and get out there and give an HIM my best shot. |

Great race, I would do again in a heartbeat! Not sure if I can swing that and then Boston one month later...might have to take lessons from halfironmike. I'm pretty sure I can knock off at least thirty minutes already. Just 2-1/2 hours more to go. I think I can. I think I can. I think I can. I think I can. (I read the book and I know how this works.) |

![]() ![]() | ![]() Signed up for this 3 months ago before it even got close to filling up - glad I did. Just finished HIM Lake Stevens. Took 33 minutes off my time, but still think I should be in the 5:30 range. Lots of work to do between here and there. I heard there was one tough hill on the course - Can anyone talk to the ride section? How long / grade of this hill? Thanks! |
![]() ![]() |
![]() There's 3 "hills" on the backside, one about 1/4 long and the steepest at about 9%, maybe 10? Someone may think differently. The second is not as steep, but is longer, and has a long section of false flats leading up to it. The last is again not as steep as the second, but is about as long as the 2d. The last 10 miles traditionally has a bit of headwind. There are two no pass sections, one on the bike path just before the right at Christianitios, and then one downhill after the 1st hill, I think Anyone wants, I have a decent written description of the bike course, I'd post it here but I didn't write it. PM your email addy and I'll send it |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 8 Weeks before it is time to start the HIM ramp up (November 1st). Will if you doing a 20wk training plan. Why is when you get older time goes by so much faster?? |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am in again - third straight year. Goals are to improve on last year's time and manage nutrition on the bike so that I can run a sub-1:30. I'll be heading to Boston (also third straight year) two weeks after and I'll be focusing more on the marathon this time around. The Wolf is absolutely right with the sighting issues on the second half of the swim (I recommend mirrored goggles) and yes - definitely prepare for the big spikes out on base. They are the key components of this race and what give it its teeth. Conquer them and you will have a good race. The first 25-30 and last 10 miles of the bike course can be very fast if the wind conditions are favorable. Light riders should choose wheels wisely as there can be some killer crosswinds on the back side of base - they can be downright scary in the fast downhill sections. Also note that in past years the water temp has been VERY cold. Not the past two years (official posted temps were 59° & 58° ![]() It can be cold for the first 20 or so minutes on the bike, though. I remember being uncomfortable for a while - until the first real hill on base. After that, temps were the least of my worries and it's never been something that stands out in my mind as a challenging part of the race. What does stand out is the following:Worrying about the water temp

Thanks for the run down. This will help in my training. |

![]() ![]() | ![]() Mike - Thanks for the rundown. Just for kicks, I went to Google Earth (which I have had moderate success with) to see where the climbs were and what kind of grades we are talking about and here is what I found. Climb 1 - Covers 280 vertical feet over .36 miles = 15% grade Climb 2 - Covers 300 vertical feet over 1.38 miles = 4% grade Climb 3 - Covers 230 vertical feet over .71 miles = 6% grade Does that ring true with you? I can't remember the last time I even tried a 15% grade I think there is a 12.5% grade close to my house that will see alot of practice between now and then, but I got to image there are more than a few folks walking their bike up this hill. Thanks! |
![]() ![]() |
![]() No way its 15% grade. I'd be surprised if it was much over 10%. People talk a lot about walking up this hill. I am a big guy and raced it at i think 240#. Not a great climber. i didn't come close to walking it using a 12/27. Train hills and you'll be fine |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() so by my calculations if you plan on using the him 20 wk training plan it should start on nov 20th. what are you gonna use? |
