Age Group = 40-50
Age Group Rank = 37/39
Pre-race routine:

Ususal breakfast of Cheerios and a bagel washed down with O.J. Drive to race (50 mins) Plenty of parking at race site. Body marking done by the St Cloud State College Huskies Cheerleaders ;)
Event warmup:

Took a quick spin on the bike and a quick jog to loosen up. At the per race breifing we were all cautioned about keeping well hydrated. We were also advised that we might want to try the electrolyte tables in our race packet (more of that later)
Swim
  • 15m 58s
  • 590 yards
  • 02m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

A good swim for me. I didn't panic, and having that lane line close by to reach for realy helped. I did get my goggles knocked off a couple of times. At times I was swimming really well. So I'm happy with that.
Transition 1

Comments:

Relaxed. Even found time to share a couple of comments with the guy next to me.
Bike
  • 49m 30s
  • 15 miles
  • 18.18 mile/hr
Comments:

Zooom! Wheeee! I loved it!
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Again relaxed. I recalled what the race director said about the electrolytes so I took a couple and headed off for the run
Run
  • 32m 58s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

I started off strongly. But 200 yards into the run I had to slow within another 200 I was walking. What hapenned? I was well hydrated, feeling strong. It hit me hard. The ruin was a struggle. I'm going to put it down to the electtrolyte tablets. It was the only thing I did differently
What would you do differently?:

Not take the electrolytes
Post race
Warm down:

I was bloated, had some stomach cramps. I managed to eat a banana but it didn't taste good. Drank lots of water and soaked myself under just as much. Was totally exhusted. I wasn't hungry for over 7 hours after the race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Them electrolytes

Event comments:

I'd do this one again. But not if the temps were in the 80's . The lane line for the swim would be a great help for any swimmer lacking in confidence.

Good job Ian!! Too bad about the electrolytes, though. Great job sticking it out to the finish! And  great swim and bike! You are turning into a regular fish!

I was wondering how that race would go given the weather. It was bad enough in Grand Rapids, so I knew St. Cloud would be even worse! That humidity was nearly too much for me.

Congrats again!

Ian,

Thanks for the encouragement on my Race Report. I needed to hear some of that.

Marking was done by the SCSU Cheerleaders? I guess I was too early.

As far as your electrolyte tablets... They very well could have been the problem.

On the other hand...

-Maybe it was the full bottle of Gatorade. That is a lot of sugar. Gatorade is also a hypertonic fluid that tends to draw water into the stomach.

-Maybe it was the timing of your breakfast. This was an early race and if you didn't eat an hour earlier that food may have been still in your stomach and then gone undigested during the race.

-Maybe it was the timing of your meal the night before.

-Did you -- errrr, ummm -- poop prior to the race? Normally?

Thanks;
I'm tending to agree with everyone now on the Gatorade theory. Everything else you mention was OK.
I'll water it down as suggested for Nevis. Though I doubt it will be as hot. Though it was pretty warm by the time I finished last year.
See you there
