Subject: Finished my first 50 miler

I just finished my first 50 mile run.  It went pretty well except for some calf cramping the last lap that made me walk a lot.  So how bad should your feet hurt? I have one spot on each foot that is really painful to walk on.  Also, what do you do for recovery?  Alternate ice and heat?

Thanks

WOW! Congratulations!!!

I finished my one and only 50 miler last OCT and I think I am almost recovered now!

Seriously, I was one HURTING unit for about two weeks! My recovery consisted of lots of fluids and Vitamin I!

I know, not much help here. But you sound like you are in A LOT better condition than I was after mine.

Which one did you run? Paved/Trail/Combo?

Once again, congrats on a huge accomplishment!!!

Yeah i don't feel that bad...mostly sore legs and get this....shoulders lol!  It was all on a paved loop.  Yeah the two spots on my feet hurt pretty bad, and i'm hoping it's not a stress fracture.  I am doing and ironman in 18 weeks so i really evaluated my condition during the race and if I felt like the pain was injury pain i was going to stop.  I never got to that point so i am thinking it's just a worn out muscle.

Wow, 18 weeks out from doing an IM. And I was worried b/c I signed up for a marathon 4.5 months out from an IM next Spring!

Well, your run should be fine!

Mine was all paved as well and it killed my legs and joints. My next 50 Miler is going to be a trail run. Slower times but easier on the body (at least that is what I hear).

I would just do a lot of swimming and cycling for a week or two while your feet recover.

Once again, great job.

Congrats on your finish!!!!  I agree with swimming and biking for a bit until your feet feel better.  I couldn't imagine running 50 miles on the road.

I'm sending in my application for my first 50 mile tomorrow morning *gulp*

Congrats on the mighty accomplishment. Make sure you are stretching over the next couple of days to stay limber. Walk around a bit as well. Keep an eye on that foot pain, if it doesn't clear up in a couple weeks, get it checked out.

Thanks for the comments.  I am always very conscious about my pain...So i went ahead and we to the dr and got xrays to make sure there wasn't a glaring stress fracture.  He has been a volunteer physician for the western states 100 before so he kinda knows whats going on.  He said he wasn't 90% positive that it was that tendon that runs around your ankle.  So i feel much better.  Taking the week off from running, but will be on the bike for some easy spins.  Legs feel pretty good today.
