To the American's on our team Happy Fourth of July.  To the Brit on our team I hope you are having a good fourth too!

Woo Hoo!  I'm glad to be back on this team.   My name is Geoff Wieczynski.  I live in Lafayette, CA.  I think this is my third TdF challenge.  I have 5 kids and a wife (Danette).  One (Logan) is a Border Patrol Agent in Tuscon, AZ.  Another is a Marine Officer (Leigh).  #3 is in college in Montery (Landon).  Son #4 (Layton) is an incoming freshman in high school.  My daughter (Dennae) is heading to 8th grade.

I am training for a 70.3--Big Kahuna--which is in Santa Cruz CA.  It was my first half a couple of years ago.  I have unfinished business there.  I blew up on mile 7 of the run and hope to redeem myself this year.   I've changed jobs and am having a hard time finding time to train--specifically on the bike.  Last year I did my first IM and my volume is down huge this year.

I'm thrilled to be back with a couple of my former challenge team mates!

Buck--so how exactly do you train in Iraq?  I can't image it is easy.

The shift I usually work is an 8-5 job but I am always ready to go 24/7. But, before and after work there is usually nothing to do so I actually have more time to work out here than back in the States!

I brought my Kurt Kinetic Pro trainer and bike with me on deployment this time for riding, I have a bunch of "dreadmills" for running and we even have a 16.5 yard long pool nearby on the compound where I can swim (very short laps ). So training is actually pretty easy here, as long as you like treadmills and trainers!

So my real name is Buck Rogers (anyone know who the"Real" Karl Hungus is? ) and when not dpeloyed I live in Admas, TN and work on Ft Campbell, KY. I have never done a tdf challenge before although cycling is my first exercise love and has been since I started racing back in 1988. I, also, have FIVE kids ranging in age from 9 to 1. My wife is a SAINT and has been taking care of them all while I have been gone.

I have only done a few short Tri's but will be doing my own "Saddam Memorial" HIM here on my compound in OCT (2000 m swim in my short pool, 56 on the trainer and a half mary on the treadmill). I am also going to hopefully be able to sign up for IM LOU for 2011 this August on-line. I have run two full marathons and one ultra marathon (Nashville 50 Miler last OCT). I used to road race bikes for years but not actually racing them for a while now.

We should have an awesome time for this chellenge!!!

I will be nout of internet access for up to 14 days starting tomorrow night, but will make sure to get my remaining 9 rides of 30 miles each in!!!

Good Roads!

Hello all,

My name is Tim, this is my first TdF challenge.  I just completed my first triathlon 2 weeks ago.  My goal is 13 stages, but I wrecked my bike on Friday.  No real injuries, but a bent rim, and money is tight, so I will be riding my MTB or a spin bike at the gym, but I will get the 13 stages in, but my first won't be until tomorrow.

Now a little about me...I'm 37, married with 2 kids.  My oldest will be 17 this month and my youngest will be 13 in December.  I am a Network Administrator during the day, and a computer geek by night.

I got started in triathlon in January after I failed my fifth fitness test in the Air National Guard. When I started, I dreaded the workouts, especially running, but I have grown to miss them when I don't get a workout in. I still love the bike most.  I ride a vintage Ross road bike, and hope to get a better road bike in the next year.

And one last thing, I love the TdF.

Jackie:  I don't have a problem with you being the manager!   You did a great job bringing out the stick last year when our team fell behind.

Buck:  I figured the "Buck Rogers" was the fake name!  I'll let others google Karl  Laughing

Tim: Welcome to the team!

I completed stage 2 for 90 more minutes today.

First and foremost, thank you and your family for serving. Second, Nice to see you again Jackie. From those of us across the pond, sorry about your loss , "Long live the Queen" (long standing joke between us).

My name is Joe, I am the resident BT frugal gear geek. As Geoff noticed on my blog, I am training on a Computrainer. Anyone else on the team have one? We could do a few stages together possibly.  I need the ridding miles to help my evaluation on the CT for a BT review. (too many letters )

I aged up to the 40-44 AG this year. Have a lovely wife and two kids 10 and 7...that changes in the next 45 days on both of them I have been on BT since 03, and have been racing since 04. My big race this weekend is at the end of August. I am racing the Cranberry Triathlon sprint and oly races on consecutive days. My training has been spotty at best, and I need to really push myself into peak form by then.

I have 12 stages and 10 hours as my goal. I have set this goal as "lofty". Not because it is a lot, but more because I have not worked out 12 days in a month for quite awhile, let alone all biking that much. I will do my best not to let down the team. I am truly hopping to go way past the 10 hours number, but I wanted an achievable number to work on.

I hit stage 2 in the AM and it should be pretty good, as long as I get out of bed for it

Happy 4th to all, and see you on the road!

I posted this on tri talk, but didn't get much help.  So, I turn to my teammates.  I have a Ross road bike that has 27 inch tires, so I assume it has 27 inch rims.

I wrecked it on Friday and bent the front rim.  Not bad, but enough that it rubs on the brakes.

My question is:  Can bent rims be repaired and/or are 27 inch rims hard  to find/expensive?

Thanks, I am a bike maintenance noob.

Good question. Sounds a little scary to me. I would get a new rim as it is too scary to ride on damaged equipment. The injuries if it decides to fail altogether are too much for me to justify saving a few dollars. But, take it to your local bike shop and see what they say. Cannot hurt to get their opinion.

THANKS to whoever posted my workout yesterday!!!

I finally figured out how to get on the Googledocs website. Are we just going to add to our totals ion the same column each workout?

And for the rest of the team: Go ahead and come up with a goal, any goal, that will get you out of the house and onto the bike! (or maybe into the trainer room and onto your trainer!)

If the rim is not true, but not rubbing the breaks, then there is a good chance the wheel needs to have the spokes adjusted. this is best done by a local bike shop (LBS). If it actually has a crease in it and bent, replace it. Base wheels are not too bad in price. The price dose depend on if it is a front or rear wheel as the free wheel assembly cost more on the rear wheel.  Either way, a good LBS would be a great place to start if you have one near by. I agree, an injury due to wheel failure is not worth it.

Ok, second ride done and I am 20% of the way to Paris already Mind you, it is the week day rides that will mess with my numbers. Went out and preroad the course for my race next weekend. Depending on how I feel tomorrow, I may be dropping down to the sprint instead of the oly distance.

I agree that you should replacement them immediately.

Sometimes you can bend the rims back and they will work.  On the road you can bang them against the ground to bend them back (no really).  I would use that only for a short time.  Or you can take the rim to the bike shop and get them to look at it.   It could be as simple as a spoke being wacked.

You might take the tactic of buying a whole used bike just to get the 27' wheels.  It might be cheaper.

NICE!!!

I, also, just finished my Second Stage, 30.5 miles and now am a little over 20% of the way to my goal (10 stages, 300 miles).

Of course, I will soon be without a nike or computer access for up to 10 days, but I'll get the workouts in some way!!!

I am able to sign in and get to our spreadsheet but it will not allow me to input any data? Not sure why? I rode my second stage today, 30.5 miles. It also is showing me as 5.2% complete as of yesterday when I am actually over 10% complete as of yesterday and now over 20% complete. I'm confused!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
