Subject: swimsuit wearing thin, too early!!
Hoping for insight so this doesn't happen again...
Question about my Tyr jammer that I've been swimming with. I've only had the suit for 4 months or so and I'm finding that two areas seem to be wearing unusually and possibly breaking down. The area where my legs meet my pelvis (inguinal area) and on either side of the seam down the center of the back of the suit- both appear to have some part of the material breaking down. There is white "dandruff-like" debris and the remaining fabric is more transparent then the adjacent, normal areas. I knew the pool was a harsh environment, but I always rinsed the suit in normal water and send it through those water extractors that spin out all the water. The suit hasn't been washed in a washing machine or sent through a dryer. After I swim with it, I typically drape it over a seat in my car to dry the rest of the way. I did recently do a brick run-swim (I know it's backwards) with the suit on, and it was after that I noticed the inguinal areas start to break down. Recommendations on swimsuit care to prevent this? I imagine I need to replace it now- it's not "indecent" yet, but I don't know how much more I want to wear it before it falls apart more. If you think the Tyr brand is the cause, or what's happening to my suit is a result of a low-quality model, let me know what you would recommend.
Thanks in advance.

Same thing happened to one of my Tyr jammers - might have lasted 6 months, but seemed too soon to me.  I actually have another set that is more than a year and half older that are still holding up well.  Not sure if Tyr changed something in either the manufacturing or construction between the 2, but I haven't bought any from them since (have 2 Speedo's that I rotate with my first Tyr set and all are doing fine)

You need:

100% polyester or PBT

NO lycra

The lycra is what wears out super-fast. I swam in a heavily chlorinated pool and destroyed a pair of mens jammers in 8 weeks. With poly though, it looks brand new after a whole year.

Speedo "endurance" brand is 100% poly/pbt, but anything that is the same material will work fine. I have the cheaper ones from Finis.

x2 on the polyester, poly suit would last me an entire school year, when I would go through 4-5 nylon or lycra suits in the same pool over the same period of time. The poly suits are also a somewhat thicker material, so less likely to become see through at any time.

x3 on polyester.  My first two lycra suits wore out quick, but I can't even remember how old my polyester ones are.

Polyester and/or PBT only. Lycra and spandex will go transparent in 3-6 months.

Know that poly does not stretch as much as lycra so if you wear a rather tight pair of lycra you might want to go up a size with poly. Be sure you like 'em, though because they'll last literally years.

My TYR square legs lasted a whopping 9 weeks.  That's with 3 or 4 days a week in the pool.  Picked up a cheap pair of Dolfin Poly Square legs and they're great after months.  No wear at all.  Poly's the way to go.

Mine too. I wish all my gear was as durable. I ruined a brand-new pair of desoto tri shorts in about 3 months before someone turned me on to the magic of polyester swimwear.

I got almost a year out of my Tyr jammers, but I swim (twice a week) in a non-chlorinated pool- so that probably helps.  My lycra bathing cap (way more comfy than the rubbery ones), is also on it's last laps.

Just purchased a pair of Speedo Quantum Jammers- which are supposed to last longer and do feel quite a bit thicker/sturdier than the Tyr's.  To note- the speedo runs smaller than the Tyr, so you may want to size up.

Lycra may not last as long as poly, but it has a nice, comfortable stretchy feel.  I'm willing to spend the extra $35/year to be in lycra.  That's the cost of one bike tire (if you get it on sale).

I love my Speedo Endurance+ jammers and no longer worry about my crack showing. They do not stretch as much as lycra so you want to make sure you get the right size. I just rinse them out with some Woolite after each swim and hang them up to dry.
