Has anyone ever had this happen to a ring of yours?

I usually take my wedding ring off at night, when I shower and when I swim.  Today, we went to a small amusement park and water park down in Cincy.  While we were in the pool, my wedding band looked as though it was turned on my finger as sometimes happens.  I went to adjust it and it felt odd.  Upon closer inspection, it had broken!  Not only that but a small piece of it was missing.  I also found another crack in it as well.

Anyone have any ideas?

It must be those punishing uppercuts you deliver to those who dare cross you.

No ideas, but very strange.

What kind of metal is it?  Gold shouldn't be brittle enough for that.

That was my first thought as well.

12k gold.  A very small diamond on the center.  At least that didn't fall out.

I was thinking if maybe from wearing while biking if that may have contributed to it.

Add to it, I couldn't wear it for several years being on the very large size.  Now that I've dropped weight over the past year I was finally able to wear it again.  The wife was rather bummed when she saw it at the pool.

My first thought was Kevin's band "Scrantonicity" from The Office.

I thought you meant that the band that was going to play at your wedding experienced something odd.

No, it really is my wedding ring!  I'm on one marriage and 2 wedding rings.

Children bumped into the dresser, knocking off the first one which we never found, even when we were moving.

Maybe I should just have wedding ring tattooed on my finger.

I lost my wedding band within months.  We both kinda figured it would happen, so we never bothered replacing it.  I was more upset than she was. (Again, the loss was expected to happen, only a matter of time...)

No biggie.  Every now and then I wish I still had it, but not enough to buy another one, especially at today's gold prices.

Asked about the tattoos at one point. Was told that on the hand would be very painful, and they tend to fade there.

I'm sure you can get it repaired though.

Parents bought me a ring for my 21st which did a very similar thing, no idea how much or the details of it but my parents reckon it cost a bit and it just cracked around the gem on it and basically fell apart, didn't wear it all the time and think it was about 2 years later as well.  Wasn't really big into rings so didn't worry about it.  Thankfully wedding ring is still going well in one piece after almost 4 years.

I'm going to take it to a jeweler and see what they have to say about it. The wife wants to get new rings now (this will make the 3rd set in 18 years).

This happened to my wife's engagement band.  It had broken in one spot twice and she just noticed yesterday that a piece was missing.  Hers was white gold and was attached to her wedding band to make it stronger, but that didn't help.   We're not sure why this has happened, but she's bummed about it!  Also as for having lost a wedding band, I didn't lose one, but lost a lot of weight and my original doesn't fit.  So I got a titanium replacement band from etsy for about $45 and I love it!!

I had a ring break once, it broke where the jeweler had previously cut and remolded to change the size of the ring. I took it to a different jeweler and he said it happens sometimes when the sizing isn't done correctly.

So prob not from biking.

I remeber that they stretched it out a little when we bought it.  That may have started it and it took all this time to finally give way.  I'll have to take a picture of it and post it.

My wife's band did break where it was resized.  Probably why it broke there.  She doesn't want to get it set in another band since it's the one I gave her, but I told her it would be better than the ring falling apart and losing the diamond (it'd be really, really hard to find...Wink)

A while back, either on this forum or that other one, was talk about chlorine and gold not playing well together kind of like chlorine and lycra. Anyway, the chlorine was supposed to make the gold more brittle and prone to breaking. After reading it, my wife and I both quit wearing our rings to the pool.

I've rarely worn in while swimming.  I just didn't take it off this time.

I'm sorry, but I've seen the title of this thread repeatedly on the COJ front page and I just keep thinking that you have a musical band that plays weddings...

me too!

I had a ring of my great grandmother enlarged so I could wear it and it cracked.    But the band was pretty slim - it snapped while I was washing dishes.   I need to get that fixed....

To continue the saga......

I put the ring in my pocket this morning to take to work to prove that I wasn't kidding about it being broken.  When I reached in my pocket and got hold of the ring, I felt it break again.  Now it is in 2 pieces!

And to add, I must be metalurgically challanged.....

I bought a regulation horseshoe set for a tournament.  This evening was the first time to use the new set.  On the second toss, the horseshoe BROKE!  A while later on another pitch, a second horseshoe BROKE!

I can't take it back because we bought it on clearance!
