Subject: North Carolina - noncoastal waters?

I'm carefully considering a move to NC (Pinehurst). I know I cannot live in a landlocked area; it makes me very edgy. I need water.

I see where there is a river west of Pinehurst by about 34 miles. I'm wondering if it's more of a creek/ditch or a real river that I could go boating on.

Are there any lakes in that general area or within an hour drive? A lake big enough for sailboating?

I think the coast would be a 2 hour drive which wouldn't be terrible but much less than ideal.

Thanks for weighing in with your NC geographical $0.02.

At the end of our recent vacation, we spent two days with my aunt outside of Albemarle, NC. For 40 years, she has lived on a reservoir created when Kaiser (I think) damned up the Pee Dee River, the reservoir now falls under the jurisdiction of CP&L. Anyway, there has been plenty of development there, houses all along the river. The lake/river has public access, and there is a lot of boating and jet skiing going on.

She didn't know of any triathlons held on the river though. The surrounding terrain is very hilly, not a lot of altitude but constanly rolling, like to killed me to run six miles. Might not be conducive to tri-ing, but training would be awesome.

Albemarle is ~50 miles from Pinehurst, about halfway to Charlotte.

Hmmm evidently there is a lake (200 acres? hah - a spitting pond!) in Pinehurst where a triathlon occurs. I've been to Pinehurst, didn't know they had a lake. Interesting...

This might be doable.

"Probably most importantly, the Pinehurst Triathlon is the crown jewel of the NCTS when it comes to race venues. Very simply, Pinehurst is blessed with a beautiful race venue (the Pinehurst Marina), a gorgeous, clean, calm lake for the swim, a challenging bike course, and a great run course. Pinehurst has it all – undoubtedly the reason why Pinehurst is the largest international distance race between Washington DC and Florida."

Renee, Pinehurst is 55 miles south from where I am sitting right now. The lake at Pinehurst is not a major one but there are several in NC or you can go south into SC to Santee-Cooper. I'll have to check on the river you are referring to. The main river in NC is the Cape Fear. It runs from approx. Sanford to Wilmington. NC is a great place to live (but I am from here) and the Pinehurst Tri is supposed to be one of the nicest tri's on the east coast. I could not go last year due to new daughter. I plan on it this year though! Let me know if you have any specific questions.

i know a guy in Charlotte who absolutely loves it.  He's a sailing freak.  He has said he can do a tri in his neighborhood- swim in the lake, get at least a 20K by doing a couple loops in the neighborhood, and a smaller lap for the run.  All without leaving his area to a major road.  Nice, huh?

and I'm geographically challenged- I have no idea where Pinehurst is in relation to Charlotte.

Now, next question- why the move?  Just 'cause?

Christine, my sister lives there with my nephews (godsons). I have no kids and no man so I thought I might as well live there where I would at least get to watch the kids grow up. I'm very close to the boys. I need more affection in my life.

NC is GREAT! I live in Raleigh and there are plenty of lakes, rivers, and the ocean for sailing and such. Plus the people are FRIENDLY! And it is a great place to train...Asheville has killer cycling routes with insane hills, the eastern part of the state is flat when you want to be *fast* and we have an AWESOME BT group here!

Renee,

If you were to go to Raleigh from Pinehurst it would take you a little over an hour. There are 2 major lakes enroute. If you keep going east you will be at the coast in 2 hrs. You move here and I PROMISE you would have more than enough training and support from the NC BT'ers to make you happy!

You would be an hour southwest of HookedonTri and tpetersen02 and an hour due south of me, jkbostic and WakeMan. There are good tri clubs in NC also.

Thanks, Fred! I told my sis that if I moved up there, she would have to start running with me. Since she was a swimmer back in the day, she'd be just one step shy of making the tri commitment. I'll get her there! She's competitive as heck so it wouldn't take much to get her in gear. That would be so fun! Until she started beating my times... then I'll have to start making comments about her neglecting her kids or somethin'.
